Communication Committee Notes

Monthly Conference Call November 18, 2010

Katie Barnes, Lourdes Fernandez, Debra Jackson, Darlene Leysath, Sharon Shadbegian, Antonio Tovar, and Brittany Curtis (PRC Program Office). Notes by: Katie Barnes (Action Steps are highlighted)

Meeting time will stay on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 11:00am EST. Our next meeting will be Dec. 16th.

Communication Survey was conducted at the annual meeting. We are interested in the results of this survey. Katie will ask Sharrice getting the results for our next meeting.

Brittany Curtis shared an update on the Positioning Project: Developing visual and verbal standards via PowerPoint. Design elements, tag lines, and templates for fact sheets will available for the NCC to use early next year. Content will still need to go through clearance if we want to include the CDC or DHHS graphic identifier but we can use NCC and PRC without clearance. There is a Visual Standard Guide that will help us with font and other design elements. There is also a Verbal Standard Guide that will help us with tag lines and other verbal standards that will support consistency across all of the PRC Program. A copy of the PPT was shared with PRC directors at APHA in Denver and will be sent out to the Communication Committee.

The PPO Committee is working on finding the best CBPR definition for the NCC to adopt. The following is the PRC Program Office definition of Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR): A joint effort involving researchers and community representatives in all phases of the research process. The joint effort engages community members, employs local knowledge in the understanding of health problems and the design of interventions, and invests community members in the processes and products of research. In addition, the collaborative is invested in the dissemination and use of research findings to improve community health and reduce health disparities. [PRC Program, 2007] The Communication Committee will discuss if this definition works for the NCC at our next meeting.

The Communication Committee decided that we want to have a Face book page to share announcements, reminders, and post issues or questions. We decided that the leadership team should be the administrators. We need to hear from the NCC general membership on: 1) whether we want an open or closed account and 2) who will open the account; can Sharrice? The Communication Committee will ask these questions at our next monthly call.
