Introduce Jan LandeenPromoting Educational Research Capacity through Systematic Evaluation of Curricular Innovation.

Schools of nursing are challenged to promote the research capacity and scholarship of faculty while simultaneously evaluating the impact of the undergraduate nursing curricula. Recent curricular revisions at the McMaster Mohawk Conestoga BScN Program provide an ideal opportunity to address this challenge. The newly revised Kaleidoscope Curriculum purposefully promotes integration of pathophysiology, evidence informed decision making, ways of knowing and a structured clinical reasoning model throughout the program. The Kaleidoscope Curriculum has also enhanced problem-based learning by bringing the person to the centre of the learning experience. This collaborative research project uses an innovative approach to educational research to address the questions: Have the educational innovations of the Kaleidoscope Curriculum made a difference in the graduates of the BScN Program? Are there unintended consequences of the curricular modifications? An interpretive descriptive qualitative methodology is used to develop and organize multiple focused sub-questions for the study. This presentation will include strategies for (a) constructing a comprehensive evaluation matrix for conducting educational research, (b) building research capacity by involving junior faculty in secondary data analyses, and (c) collaborating across educational institutions in joint educational research.
Main changes in Kaleidoscope
· PBL/PBL – educational innovation
· Ways of Knowing – how to use
· Integration of Pathophysiology
· Int of EIDM – clinical reasoning – Tanner
Pull together – education research and what would it look like
2 perspectives
· Looking at things from the dance floor
· Looking at things from the balcony
What else can we do – generate educational research
Questions:
Was Kaleidoscope Curriculum harmful?
Are there changes in pass rates?
How successful are students?
What are the outcomes on exams?
Research Teams
· Find people you work well with
· How to develop capacity
· Used mixed methods
· Design what works
· Team talk about rationale
Takes a while to implement educational change
