KOMU “8 Goes Green”
COLUMBIA, MO – In September 2009, KOMU 8 launched an ongoing sustainability initiative called 8 Goes Green. 8 Goes Green was developed to encourage viewers to join KOMU 8 in making small but important lifestyle changes to conserve resources and save money.
“8 Goes Green was created to promote sustainability on several platforms,” said KOMU 8 General Manager Marty Siddall. “When we launched the campaign, we made 8 Goes Green a weekly franchise on KOMU 8 News and KOMU.com. We also made a commitment to go green as a television station.”
KOMU 8 has begun using compact energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs in its studio, turning off lights and heating/cooling units in unoccupied rooms, and recycling tapes, batteries, paper and more. KOMU 8 has also partnered with MU’s Sustainability Office to get more information on how to better conserve energy at the station.
In addition to the news segments, KOMU 8 airs a series of 8 Goes Green PSAs, featuring talent from KOMU 8, NBC and The CW who offer viewers helpful tips and information on how they can become more eco-friendly. For many of these promotional materials, KOMU 8 partners with local businesses to inform the public how 8 Goes Green makes a difference in the community throughout the year.
KOMU 8 plans to keep 8 Goes Green as an ongoing project. KOMU 8 has committed to undergoing an energy audit performed by MU’s Sustainability Office to find out how it can further reduce its energy consumption.
