The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) would like to invite your students to participate in our Ready to Lead (R2L) San Jose program, which will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Santa Clara University from 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
CHCI’s R2L is a one-day intensive college-going event which provides students with the tools and training necessary to prepare for college. The program helps more Latino high school students enter postsecondary education by motivating them to complete high school, empowering them to serve and lead in their communities, and educating them on the college-going process.
R2L San Jose consist of a full day of student-focused programming including a continental breakfast, college planning and readiness workshops, lunch, inspirational keynote addresses, and a one-hour mentoring session with local community leaders and professionals. While the content of the Saturday’s event is beneficial for all students, the information to be provided is intended for students who are currently in the ninth and tenth grades. If you are interested come to the CCC and see Mrs. Taylor for the appropriate forms no later than May 5, 2016.
The Metas Program at San Jose City College would like to invite students and their parents to Parent College, which will be held in two parts; Part 1 will be held on May 7th, 9-12:00 pm. And Part 2 will be held May 14th, 9-12:00 pm. Parent College assists family members with gaining awareness to support their sons and daughters transitioning from high school to community college. Parents will understand the differences between community college and a university. Parents will learn about the requirements for earning a certificate, attaining an associate degree, or transferring to a university. The sessions provide information about Federal Student Aid and other forms of financial aid. Parents will learn about campus resources and services to get their son or daughter connected to campus and have successful first year in college. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Euro School of Tennis is now hiring for after school instructors and after school program leaders. They are also looking for tennis/sports camp counselors and after-care camp attendants for their summer tennis and sports camps. Via West is offering seasonal job and volunteer opportunities for your juniors and seniors. Via West is an organization that offers year-round weekend and week-long programs to individuals with disabilities and special needs. City of Campbell is looking for lifeguards and swim instructors for this summer. The City of Campbell will provide all the necessary training. Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is offering paid summer internships for high school students who are 16 years of age by Thursday, June 16th, 2016. Silicon Valley Career Technical Education
SVCTE is now offering 2-hour classes; Cybersecurity, Mobile App Design & Computer Coding, Auto Body Refinishing, Auto Body Repair, Fashion Design & Textile Art, Film & Video Production, Forensic Sciences and Sports Medicine & Kinesiology. Come to the College and Career Center to pick up a flyer with more information.
They are also offering an opportunity to shadow a class of your choosing on April 19th. The times are from 7:30-10:30 and 12:30 to 3:30. If you are interested you need to RSVP Marysol Ruiz at 408-613-9121.
They are also offering Cyber Pirates Summer STEAM Academy program (for middle schoolers and 9th and 10th grade high schoolers) which will run from June 13th - 24th, 2016 at SVCTE, Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 1:00 pm. This summer’s theme is Cybersecurity. Registration is $499.00 but they are willing to work with families that need financial assistance. College Scholarships
Please see the latest scholarship bulletins under the document tab in Naviance for a complete up to date list of current scholarships. There are two bulletins:
The General Scholarship bulletin lists scholarships that are available to all students.
The In-House Scholarship bulletin lists scholarships available to only Willow Glen High School students. (Please come by the CCC for the in-house scholarship applications.)
(I also keep a folder in the CCC of those scholarships from various universities that are contingent on attendance.)
Special Events/Special Information:
San Jose City College is offering a Nursing Preparation Workshop. It will take place on Tuesday, 4/26, from 11:00-1:00. Location is SC-216 (Job Placement Center/Student Center) on campus. You can pick up a flyer in the CCC.
Tom Karn who is a Financial Advisor for Waddell and Reed is offering a free lunch presentation called “Saving for College – Funding and Investing for Your Child’s Future” at the Pruneyard Towers in Campbell on April 26th from 11:30 to 12:30. The address is: 1999 S. Bascom Avenue, Suite 400, Campbell, CA. The seminar will also include lunch. Parents and guests are invited. Asse International Student Exchange Programs:
· Asse Outbound Program offers overseas experience through academic year and semester programs, three-month programs, and summer homestay, adventure and language programs to countries throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas. The Walter Danielson Scholarship covers 100% of the program fees, one field trip in the host country and a monthly allowance. They also offer a 90% reduction in program fee scholarship to many students.
· ASSE International Student Exchange Program in conjunction with the U.S. Department of State sponsored Congress-Bundestag Youth Scholarship (CBYX) Program provides full program scholarship to American high school students to live and study in Germany for one academic year.

Kaskazi Environmental Alliance (KEA) is a U.S. based not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive environmental education to East African communities. KEA was formed in response to the continued devastation of the marine/coastal regions of East Africa resulting from pollution, destructive fishing practices, and over-exploitation of natural resources exacerbated by a virtuallack of environmental awareness.
