Objective: To gain a better understanding of citrus production practices, greening management, canker and other citrus diseases present in Brazil.

Tentative Program Itinerary (subject to change)

Saturday, May 23 Depart Miami to Sao Paulo, Brazil (night flight)

(Miami to Sao Paulo is approximately 8 hour flight)

Arrive in Sao Paulo next day in early morning

Visit local craft market prior to lunch

Sunday, May 24 Lunch in Sao Paulo, Terrace Italia, downtown Sao Paulo

Travel to Araraquara (approximately 5 hours)

Overnight in Araraquara (Fazenda Salto Grande)

Monday, May 25 Grove visit to see CVC, blight, greening survey methods.

Greening farm in the afternoon that has significant greening problem with Tony A. F. dos Santos, Fundecitrus

Overnight in Araraquara (Fazenda Salto Grande)

Tuesday, May 26 Visit a farm with greening in Araraquara in the morning

Visit Fundecitrus in Araraquara in the afternoon

(Fundecitrus is a grower supported regulatory agency)

Travel to Limeira (Hotel Carlton)

Wednesday, May 27 Visit with Gilberto Tozatti and Reinaldo Donizeti Corte from GCONCI

Morro Grande Farm (Corumbatai) 50 km drive, owner Sylvio Roberto Baggio (230,000 trees), 1% of greening, but some area with over 30%, which have been eradicated: survey, management, control of Diaphorina, and other problems

Bom Jesus Farm (Sta Cruz de Conceicao) 20 km drive, owner Jose Astor Baggio (40,000 trees) low incidence of greening, but some area with over 20% and eradication is under way.

Lunch – Cachoeira das Emas, in Pirassununga (fish specality)

Capao Bonito Farm (Porto Ferreira) 40 km drive, owner Jose Astor Baggio (60,000 trees) discuss management of CVC, black spot, leprosis, and blight (declinio)

Depart from Sao Paulo on late evening flight to Londrina in the State of Parana, Overnight in Londrina (Comfort Suite Hotel)

Thursday, May 28 Meet Dr. Ruy Leite from IAPAR

Visit Corol Cooperative to see canker exclusion

Performance of varieties for resistant to citrus canker

Overnight in Londrina

Friday, May 29 Travel to Cocamar Cooperative in Paranavai

Canker management: windbreak, chemical spray, different varieties

Saturday, May 30 Visit groves with Dr. Eduardo Fermino Carlos

Depart for Sao Paulo at 3:00 PM

Depart Sao Paulo for an overnight flight to Miami

Sunday, May 31 Arrive in US via Miami

Tour price including all airfare (from and to Miami), hotel, ground transportation and limited meals is $3,000 per person and is based upon 15 tour participants. Airfare is based upon coach fare to and from Sao Paulo via Miami and to and from Londrina via Sao Paulo. Hotel accommodations are based upon single occupancy. If fewer than 15 participate in the tour, the rate will increase to cover the fixed cost of the tour.

Sunday, May 31 Depart Sao Paulo, travel to Limera by bus

Monday, June 1 Visit citrus packing house and groves in the morning,

Attend Citrus Week program, Sylvio Moreira Citrus Center, Cordeiropolis

Overnight in Limera (Hotel Carlton)

Tuesday, June 2 Attend Citrus Week program in the morning

Depart Cordeiropolis in mid afternoon and return to Sao Paulo for night flight back to the US

Wednesday, June 3 Arrive in Miami

Optional tour is an additional $550 and includes hotel (Sao Paulo and Limera) and ground transportation. Hotel accommodations are based upon single occupancy. If fewer than 15 participate in the optional tour the rate will increase to cover the fixed cost of the tour.

Deposit: $700 per person and is required by March 1, 2009. Balance due by April 1, 2009.

Cancellation: Before final payment, the deposit is non refundable unless another person can take your place. Once tour is paid in full and you can not find a replacement, payment is non refundable. However, airline ticket can be used within one year with a $200 penalty.

A visa to enter Brazil is not included in the price and must be obtained prior to departure by each participant. The visa process takes up to 4 weeks to obtain via normal processing. Rush visa requests are possible but at a significantly higher fee. I will provide visa service information upon request.
