Chemical Bonding Comic Strip

This project is DUE Monday, 12/13

The Task:

You are to research the different types of chemical bonding, which includes Ionic, Covalent, and Metallic Bonds. Next, pretend that you are a Chlorine atom (or atom of your choice, must be approved by teacher) and create a comic strip describing an adventure in which you form 2 chemical bonds (Ionic & Covalent) and observe the third bond type (Metallic) during your adventure. The comic strip that you create must be made up of at least 8 slides.

Objectives and Purpose:

· To create images and visuals that represent what occurs in Ionic, Covalent and Metallic Bonding

· To demonstrate an understanding of Ionic, Covalent and Metallic Bonds.

· To explain when various forms of chemical bonds will occur.

· To describe and visually represent the properties of ionic, covalent and metallic bonds.

Procedure:

Answer the following questions (Part A) on a separate sheet of paper as you conduct your research. On Monday, December 13, you will hand in the answers to these questions along with your comic strip and THIS PAPER. All questions must be answered in complete sentences and you must answer these questions BEFORE starting the comic strip.

Part A – Choose the atom you will use (get teacher approval if not using Cl) and answer the following questions

1. What group is your atom in? How many valence electrons does it have?

2. What are ions and how do they form?

3. Explain the relationship between energy and the gaining of electrons. What did you have to do in order to gain

electrons?

4. What is an element that your atom is likely to bond with to form and ionic compound? What are properties of

ionic compounds

5. What is a covalent bond? What types of elements form covalent bonds?

6. What do covalent bonds form? When two of the same element, form a covalent bond what is this called?

7. What is a metallic bond?

8. Why do metallic bonds stay together even though they are made up of positively charged ions?

Part B

9. Create dialogue for comic strip using the answers to the questions above.

10. Create Chemical Bonding Comic Strip

Break Down of Time:

This activity should take you no more than an hour and half total. You are being given 95 minutes of class time in addition to 4 nights worth of homework. Plan your time and work efficiently.

35 minutes of class time(first day): Answer questions using textbook; brainstorm; begin slides and dialogue

40 minutes of class time(second day): Continue slides and dialogue

20 minutes of class time (3rd day): Continue slides and dialogue

Grading:

Questions (#1-8): 4 points – Must be answered on separate sheet of paper in complete sentences. (½ pt. each)

Comic Strip: 8 points – Having all of the questions answered in your comic strip (1pt per question)

10 points – Following directions, guidelines and standards.

Nightly

Homework: 6 points - Night #1…Answer Directions Review Questions

Night #2…2 Slides completed (minimum)

Night #3…2 additional slides (4 total)

Over for Guidelines and Standards of Work

Guidelines:

· Answer questions (Directions Review & Part A) before starting assignment.

· Must be original and drawn by hand…no computer generated images

· Each slide must be at least 10cm x 13cm – use a ruler to measure them out. (4 per page max)

· Each slide in your comic strip must contain some information from the questions above (#1-8) to count towards the minimum of 8 slides.

· You must give the proper chemical name for the ionic and covalent compounds that you form.

· Answers to questions #1-8 must be highlighted on each slide.

· A title slide is required and does not count towards the 8 required slides.

· You should create your comic strip on plain printer paper.

· Writing must be legible (you may type the story and paste it on to the slides)

· Stories must have more than one character and include dialogue and descriptive words.

· You are required to neatly color your comic strip, but will not be graded on artistic ability

· Feel free to be creative and fully demonstrate your knowledge with this assignment!!!

· You must turn in the following: your Part A answers on a separate sheet of paper, comic strip, and this direction sheet. Incomplete assignments will not be accepted!

A final thought to keep in mind as you work on this assignment at the atomic scale

“you are dealing with atoms, not people”

Directions Review: (you may answer these questions on this page…complete sentences NOT required)

What 3 items must be submitted on the due date?

What is the due date? How many points will you lose per day late? (use a calculator if needed)

How many points is this assignment and in what four areas are you being graded?

What bond(s) must your character be involved in and what bond must your character observe?

What is the minimum slide size?

Does your comic strip have to be colored and do you need a title?

Can the images be done on a computer?

Can the text be typed?

Scoring and Comments:

________ / 4 Questions (Part A)#1-8 answered correctly on a separate sheet of paper.

________ / 8 Questions (Part A) answered and highlighted in the comic dialogue

________ / 10 All Guidelines followed

_________/6 Directions Review; 2 slides (minimum); 2 additional slides
