Kindle OverDrive Instructions

If you have a Kindle Fire/HD, you can use the web browser on your device to check out library eBooks or download the OverDrive Media Console App from the Amazon App Store. This will also allow you to select EPUB & MP3 formats for your Kindle.

Checking out and Downloading eBooks to Kindle

1. Go to OMNI website (www.omnilibraries.org).

2. In the upper right hand corner click “Sign In”, select Yorkville Public Library from the pull down list, and then enter your library card number.

3. To search for a book, you may enter an author, title, or series name into the search box, or you can perform an advanced search for a more precise search.

4. Once you have found a book you would like to checkout, click “Borrow” (if the item is checked out, you can click “Place a Hold”; you will get an email when the hold is available).

5. Click “Download” and then select the Kindle Book format.

6. Click “Confirm & Download

7. You will then be brought to the Amazon.com website.

8. At this point, if you are not already logged into Amazon.com, you will be asked to enter your email address and your Amazon.com password.

9. Once you have logged into Amazon.com, you will be asked to select a delivery location. Select your device from the drop-down menu. (If your Kindle does not have access to Wi-Fi, click “transfer via computer” and skip to step 12.)

10. Click on the green button labeled “Get Library Book”.

11. For Kindle Fire/HD and Kindles with Wi-Fi, you will see the message that your library ebook will be delivered when you are connected with a Wi-Fi connection. (If the book does not appear automatically, click the menu button on your Kindle. From the list that appears, choose the option to sync your device. Your title should now be visible in your Kindle library.

Transferring books to your Kindle manually

12. If you are transferring your book to your device “via computer”, click the green button labeled “Get Library Book”.

13. Please choose which Kindle you plan to transfer your title to via USB: and click the “Continue” button

14. You will be prompted to Save the book to your computer; make sure to save it in a location that you will be able to find again; preferable on the Desktop.

15. Connect your Kindle to the computer with the USB cord that came packaged with it.

16. An AutoPlay box should appear, asking what you would like to do. Click “Open folder to view files”. The file you will use is the documents folder. (If this box does not appear, go to Start, then My Computer, and double click Kindle).

17. Copy or drag the saved ebook into the documents folder on your Kindle by holding down the left mouse button while the arrow is over the book icon and moving the mouse over the top of the documents folder.

18. +Copy to documents will appear when you are over the documents file. Let go of the mouse button and the book will be transferred to your Kindle’s Bookshelf on your home screen.

Returning your ebooks

1. Go to Amazon.com and sign in using your email and Amazon.com password.

2. Under “Your Account” select “Manage Your Kindle” from the pull down menu.

3. All library books are marked “borrowed” after the title. All the way to the right is an “Actions” button. Click this and click “Return This Book”. It will ask you “Are you sure you want to return this library loan ebook” – click yes.

4. The book title will now show that “loan expired”. Click “Actions” again and then click “Delete from Library”. It will then ask “Are you sure you want to permanently delete this item? Doing so will permanently remove it from your account.” – click yes.
