1. What is the irony in the fact that Harrison brings Longstreet the information as to the

strength and location of the Union army and how does Shaara reveal is his personality

shown to us?

1. In this chapter Chamberlain recalls a conversation he had with his father about the image

of man being an angel. What was his father’s view of that angel? Chamberlain’s father was

very proud of his son when he delivered an oration on “Man, the Killer Angel”. How would

his father view his son now given Chamberlain’s current role in the war? Chamberlain also

reflects on “home”. How does he define what home is?

Wednesday, July 1, 1863- Chapter 5- Longstreet

1. Fremantle, the English observer, has some very interesting ideas which he shares with Lee’s

staff. How does Fremantle view the officers of the South? What is his opinion on evolution?

2. Shaara uses very sharp imagery as he gives a clear picture of the horrors of war. Describe

some of the imagery which Shaara uses to create the mood in this chapter.

1. Even when he is totally frustrated with his commanders, Lee does not comment or judge,

but he does what to give them the benefit of the doubt?

1. What is ironic in the fact that it was Buford and his men who saved the high ground and the

charges brought against them by General Howard?

2. In this chapter Shaara again writes about the white angel in the cemetery. Where is

the parallel between Buford’s young lieutenants who see the white angel at the start of the

novel and now in this chapter?

1. How does Fremantle see the end of the war turning out? How does he describe the North

and what will happen to the institution of slavery?

Thursday, July 2, 1863- Chapter 2- Chamberlain

1. There is a great conversation between Chamberlain and Kilrain about the nature of man.

Chamberlain talks of every man being the same and having a divine spark. He recalls a

conversation he once had with a Southern minister who owned slaves. “How can they look

in the eyes of a man and make a slave of him and then quote the Bible?” Yet what bothers

Chamberlain about that same conversation he had with the minister?

2. As a comparison to how one views man, Kilrain’s attitude is very different from

Chamberlain’s. How does Kilrain view man? In the end what is he fighting for?

1. One of the problems with this battle is that Lee is executing very complex strategies,

something that requires flawless, close and constant communications and precise timing.

Instead how are communications handled during the battle?

Thursday, July 2, 1863- Chapter 4- Chamberlain

1. Chamberlain is confronted with a great deal of emotion in this chapter. How has he

visualized his relationship with Kilrain up to this point? When ordering his brother and other

soldiers to plug the whole in the line Chamberlain is faced with the possibility of sending his

brother off to die. He compares his use of his brother as if he was what?

Thursday, July 2, 1863 – Chapter 5 - Longstreet

1. How does Shaara describe the condition of Lee’s health through this chapter in subtle

ways?

2. Armistead will not sit out this fight even if it is the first time he will be going up against

Hancock. What is the foreshadowing that Armistead’s relates to Longstreet about the vow

he made to Hancock?

1. How does Stuart behave when his honor is questioned? Other than telling him to grow up

what does Lee tell Stuart? Even after hearing Stuart go off and pledge revenge to redeem

himself Lee knows that Stuart will not act how?

1. What is the irony in this chapter? Historically this scene is not really accurate, but why

would Shaara adjust the facts and place the 20th Maine in the center of the Union line?

1. The relationship between Lee and Longstreet is symbolic to what sort of relationship?

2. Once Lee has done all he can, he states that the matter is now in God’s hands. How does

Longstreet react to this? Why does feel that God is allowing men to be killed?

1. What foreshadowing does Hancock express during the battle? Longstreet’s concerned that

the South will be facing Hancock, who Armistead knows is the Union’s best. Knowing this

why does Lee underestimate Hancock’s leadership?

1. In this chapter Armistead reviews his life and wishes he could have been more emotional.

What personal items does he send across the lines to Hancock? What item does he give to

Pickett? At the end of the chapter he is at peace with himself and the vow he had made.

Friday, July 3, 1863 – Chapter 5 – Longstreet

1. Longstreet questions why do men die? Longstreet says he can not go on leading men to die

for nothing. How does Lee answer this for Longstreet?

Friday, July 3, 1863 – Chapter 6 - Chamberlain

1. Why is Chamberlain to the point almost thrilled at the end of the battle? Why does

he feel that he must come back to this site once the war is over? Chamberlain feels that he

has been given what privilege that most men will never have?

2. Many of the men in this novel had a hard time showing emotions. Longstreet’s emotions

towards Armistead, Lee, his men, and his wife, but cannot show them. Chamberlain feels

deep love for his brother Tom, but does not show it. Armistead had the same problem with

his feelings towards Longstreet. Why do you think that these men, who had faced so much,

and had such a hard time expressing their true emotions?

3. How is the image of rain used in this chapter? What little “gotta” does Shaara slip in has the

chapter comes to an end? Explain the meaning and the power behind this last idea.
