Those you have loved….

Our Esteemed colleague Allan Colcombe sends this:

I spotted a certain Mr Malcolm Ridsdale performing at Kings Mac last month. He was the travelling umpire with Winnington Park but I’m not sure which XI. Still the same cheerful Malcolm, still wearing his old NCHUA waterproof, and still with the same steely handshake! Perhaps older colleagues would be pleased to see he is still active.

I’ve also seen Richard Dutoy blowing a Bowdon lower XI – his son plays nowadays.

As you will know a coaching evening was held recently and all members and others were invited. You may be interested to know that the editor received a number of replies concerning this event. A certain Graham Nash said he would have loved to attend but felt that his expense claim would be rejected!! I have received the following message from Graham which some of you may want to follow up:

"Been living in Spain for 6 months now. The town is Xativa which is about 40km south-west of Valencia City and about 30km from the coast. Very 'Spanish' not many people speak English. I am having Spanish lessons but it is coming along very slowly.

I am starting to get involved with their Umpiring side but it is organized much differently to ours AND, if you think some of your players are a pain and cause problems, their umpires have to put up with 100% worse behaviour from some players and coaches. It almost seems the norm to them; hopefully they intend to tackle that soon.

If anyone is coming my way Xativa is a nice stop over town; quite a bit of history and a castle.

Best wishes to all

Graham (El Nashie)

It would be good to hear of any other colleagues that are no longer on the appointments panel but who are still active and supporting their own or other local clubs by giving up their Saturday afternoons. Please let me know any stories you may have.

COACHING

Cerise is the Colour – January 2009 Page 4

2008/9 Season Issue 27 – 2009

The coaching event mentioned above was held at Bowdon Hockey Club and proved to be another successful, NWHUA occasion. It was clearly well prepared and informative. There was a good turn out of about forty people with a wide spectrum of umpires in the audience, ranging from Level Three down to those umpiring in various Divisions of the North West League. There were also a few players present.

The Association would be grateful to receive your views on this coaching event so that we can tailor future offerings to reflect your needs and aspirations. Please send your comments to Tony Shutt at or telephone 0151 645 5835.

New Rules for 2009

The FIH posted the following statement on the website on 6th January 2009:

At meetings towards the end of 2008, the FIH Executive Board agreed proposals from the Hockey Rules Board for rules changes in 2009.

One of the changes focuses on a “self-pass” from a free hit. In essence, this enables the player taking the free hit to play the ball again after taking the free hit. This will encourage free-flowing hockey. An associated rule change will stop attacking free hits taken inside the 23 metres area from being played directly and potentially dangerously into the circle. Both changes will be introduced as mandatory experimental rules with effect from 1 May 2009 for international hockey.

The detailed text for these rules is currently being drafted and will be published as soon as possible. To ensure that application of these new rules is consistent and accurate, no more information about these rules will be published until the final rules text is available.

There are some interesting comments on The Hockey Forum site concerning these proposed changes: http://www.talkinghockey.net/index.php?topic=2870.0

Rules Tip

The following tip is from the England Hockey website:

Temporary and Permanent Suspensions of Players (and Substitutes) for both Indoor Hockey and Outdoor Hockey.

Some umpires have become confused when reading rule 14 regarding Personal Penalties.
Anyone reading rule 14 on its own (in either the outdoor or the indoor rules) should remember that the definition of a player is “One of the participants in a team”, and that the definition of a Team covers the players on the pitch and substitutes.

Rule 14.1 makes it clear that any player can be cautioned, warned, temporarily suspended or permanently suspended. As the term “player” refers to players on the pitch and to substitutes, all these actions can be taken with a substitute in exactly the same way as for a player on the pitch.

14.1 (c) and 14.1 (d) also make it clear that if any player is suspended, whether temporarily (yellow card) or permanently (red card), the affected team plays with one less player for the duration of the suspension. This applies equally whether the player being suspended happened to be on the pitch or happened to be a substitute at the time of the suspension.
