COCCC Chinese New Year Celebrations

The year of the Rat ends on January 25, and the year of the Ox starts on January 26, 2009. The Central Ontario Chinese Cultural Centre (COCCC) will celebrate the Chinese New Year with two major functions, a Festival and a Gala.

The Chinese New Year Festival (CNYF) will take place on January 17, 2009 on the second floor of the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, 101 Father David Bauer Drive. Our new Lion Dance Team will kick off the festivities near noon. Cultural exhibits, children arts and crafts, Chinese food, folk dances, Chinese calligraphy demonstration, and cultural performances will continue until 4 pm. Members of COCCC host this event to share the joy of the Chinese New Year with the community at large. All are welcome to this free- admission Festival. Performances will start at half pass the hour. Thus, drop in any time between 11 am and 4 pm.

The Chinese New Year Gala (CNYG) will be held on February 7, 2009 in Forbes Hall, RIM Park. This dinner-performance-and-dance party starts at 5 pm. Two Lions will dance to welcome guests at 5:30 pm and dinner follows. Peter Chieh, president of COCCC, indicated that representatives from local, provincial and federal government will bring their greetings to the Gala, during which the COCCC will make a Sponsorship Presentation to the Rockway Mennonite Collegiate for their exchange students to China.

Discussion had been going on for some time between the St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation (SMGHF) and COCCC. Jointly, they will embark on projects in the next three years to raise funds for St. Mary’s General Hospital. They work for the betterment of health care in the region. Some years ago, COCCC had a Cultural Gala in the Centre in the Square to raise funds for the Grand River General Hospital. Peter said that COCCC members are very community minded. Susan Dusick, vice president of SMGHF and Peter Chieh are optimistic on their joint ventures because they believe in this loving and caring community.

For further information on CNYF and CNYG please contact Peter Chieh (email ). He said that many volunteers are working diligently to enrich the programs for these events, and he suggests contact Sandra Hung, directly. She is the Treasure.
