Primary Documentation

Documentation created at the time of the event for the event being documented.

Secondary Documentation

Documentation used to document an event other than the event for which it was created.

Cemeteries

The final, though not necessarily permanent, resting place of your deceased relatives.

Reasons:

Limited use, moves and construction

Cemetery Records

· Contain the name of person buried and the date of burial.

· May contain date of death, age at death or date of birth.

· May contain next of kin, method of payment, church, funeral home, cause of death and a copy of the obituary.

· Records are usually located at the cemetery office. Some have been transcribed.

· Check the tombstone for information also.

· Remember that the tombstone may not have been placed at or near the time of death.

Military Records

· Records generated because of service as a volunteer or draftee while serving in a branch of the military. Service can be during war or peace time.

· Usually contains information on the identity of the soldier/ sailor such as name, place of enlistment, unit, date service began and ended, place of discharge and a physical description. Later records contain more information.

Within Archive Collections

· Some records previously reported as destroyed at the Service Records Centers have been found and requests for information previously denied should be resubmitted.

City Directories

· Contain names and addresses of the businesses and people within the area designated.

· May list churches, hospitals and fraternal organizations.

· May list ward boundaries or city limit descriptions.

· May list descriptions of governmental divisions and courts.

· May list street addresses and cross street listings.

· May list conversions between street numbering systems.

· May identify people with telephones.

· May list adult occupants of the household.

· May list companies/people by occupation or service.

· May indicate home ownership.

City Directories

· Generally available in libraries.

· National filming project containing city directories is available outside of their local area. (U of L-Micrographics)
