1918

·  World War I ends with an armistice. YES- World War II begins when World War I ends....

1919

·  The Treaty of Versailles is signed by Germany. It includes that Germany and take all responsibility for the war and full reparations are demanded -especially from Germany.

1921

·  July 29 - Adolf Hitler becomes leader of National Socialist 'Nazi' Party (fascist). Fascists believe that the nation is more important than the individual.

1922

·  October 28-The March on Rome - In Italy the nationalist movement under Mussolini, disappointed with the results of the war for Italy (they had wanted more land than they got), takes power.

1925

·  July 18 - Hitler's book Mein Kampf published. In the book Hitler alludes to his desire to become leader, expand Germany's territory, and his "Final Solution" (Holocaust) for the "Jewish problem".

1929

·  October 29 "Black Tuesday"- stock market crash plunges the world into a depression.

1931

·  September 18 Japan invades Manchuria

1933

·  Jan 30 Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany. He is elected to this position.

·  March 12 - First concentration camp opened at Oranienburg outside Berlin.

1934

·  January 24 Pact of non-aggression and friendship between Germany and Poland

·  March 16 - Hitler violates the Treaty of Versailles by introducing military conscription.

·  Sept 15 - German Jews stripped of rights by Nuremberg Race Laws

1936

·  Feb 10 - The German Gestapo, or Hitler's secret police, is placed above the law.

·  March 7 - German troops occupy the Rhineland.

·  May 9 - Mussolini's Italian forces take Ethiopia.

·  October 25- German-Italian treaty between Rome and Berlin (the Axis).

1938

·  March 12/13 - Germany announces 'Anschluss' (union) with Austria. German troops invade.

·  Aug 12 - German military mobilizes.

September 29 / Munich Conference. Hitler assures the world that this (Austria) is his last territorial demand. British Prime Minister Chamberlain and French Premier Daladier practice a policy of "appeasement" (giving in) to avoid a large war.

·  Oct 15 - German troops occupy the Sudetenland; Czech government resigns

1939

·  March 15/16 - Nazis take Czechoslovakia.

·  May 22, 1939 - Nazis sign 'Pact of Steel' with Italy solidifying their alliance

·  Aug 23, 1939- Nazi-Soviet non-aggression Pact signed

·  Aug 25, 1939 - Britain and Poland sign a Mutual Assistance Treaty

·  Aug 31, 1939 - British fleet mobilizes

·  Sept 1, 1939 - Nazis invade Poland.
