Case’s Rising Engineers and Technological Entrepreneurs (CREATE)
Summer Design Experience 2010 Application
Program Details
The purpose of CREATE is to involve students of all levels and all disciplines of engineering in the real-world engineering design process. Within the Summer Design Experience (SDE), students will work full time on projects presented to them by companies, hospitals and professional researchers. Simultaneously, SDE students will receive lectures and hands-on tutorials in order to learn the necessary concepts, software and skills required to solve the design problem faced by their team. The SDE gives students the unique opportunity to develop their engineering skills, take part in experiential learning and network with students, faculty and professionals. The program will consist of three to four design teams, each of which is comprised of three to five students. An additional two students will be Design Directors, who will lead and educate the three design teams. The SDE will span 11 weeks, from Monday, May 24th to Friday, August 6th.
Summer Design Experience Roles
Design Engineer – The position of Design Engineer is open to all students of all disciplines within CSE, math or the physical sciences. These students will work in teams in order meet the design needs and specifications presented to them by an industry professional. In addition to undertaking a formal design process, students in this role will take weekly lectures, workshops and labs to further understand design, project management and various types of relevant software. Design Engineers will also attend weekly tours of professional design and prototyping facilities.
Design Director – The position of Design Director is limited to two rising seniors, new graduates or graduate students. In this role, a student will lead all three design teams, educate them through a series of lectures and offer the teams assistance wherever necessary. A qualified student must exhibit exceptional academic standing, be highly motivated, be very organized and have a solid understanding of the required software as well as the overall design process. Most importantly, an applicant must have a strong desire to manage a group of young people and be willing to undertake a great deal of responsibility. This position will be a tremendous learning experience for any student who wishes to properly prepare himself/herself for the real-world industry. The selected Design Directors will receive adequate training from the CREATE Executive Board throughout the month of April in order to properly be prepared for the SDE.
Stipend Details
All students enrolled in CSE, math or the natural sciences are eligible. An award of $3,000 will be given to twelve selected Design Engineers. An award of $3,250 will be given to the two selected Design Directors.
