Careers in Education Information and Application Packet

The primary goal of the Teacher Cadet Program is to encourage academically abled students who possess exemplary interpersonal and leadership skills to consider teaching as a career. An important secondary goal of the Program is to provide these talented future community leaders with insights about teachers and schools so that they will become civic advocates of education.

The Teacher Cadet Program is an innovative approach designed to attract talented young people to he teaching profession through a challenging introduction to teaching. The Program seeks to provide high school students insight into the nature of teaching, the problems of schooling, and the critical issues affecting the quality of education in America’s schools.

Teacher Cadets

Conditions for acceptance:

·  Have a GPA/GPR of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale (B average) and/or receive a recommendation from the Review Panel. (The panel shall consist of a minimum of three members to include a school administrator or guidance counselor, the College Partner (where applicable), an instructor of the student’s choice, and, possibly, a student. The Teacher Cadet instructor serves as chair of the panel.)

·  Be enrolled in a college preparatory curriculum.

·  Be recommended in writing by three or more instructors.

·  Submit an essay on why he/she wants to be in the class. (The Cadet instructor will keep this essay on file.)

·  Be a senior and provide their own transportation to school where they will be student teaching.

·  Participate in an interview, if required.

Conditions while enrolled:

·  Agree to adhere to the Teacher Cadet Discipline Policy as outlined in the course requirements.

·  Participate and/or observe teaching activities in a variety of settings (preschool, kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school, vocational education/career centers, and special education classes, with a special emphasis on critical shortage areas).

Requirements for enrollment:

n  B-average (3.0) or better in college-preparatory courses on a 4.0 GPA scale

n  Positive recommendations from three teachers

n  Essay addressing “Why I Want to Become a Teacher Cadet” or “How a Teacher Has Had a Positive Influence on Me”

n  Completed application form

n  Interview, if deemed necessary

The following are considered when applications are being reviewed:

·  All forms returned promptly?

·  All forms returned complete and correct?

·  Applicant’s content, grammar, and writing skills above average?

Sections of the Experiencing Education curriculum:

·  Experiencing Learning: Awareness and Reflection, Styles and Needs, and Growth and Development

·  Experiencing the Profession: History and Trends, Structure and Government, Certification and Employment, and Ethics and Professionalism

·  Experiencing the Classroom: Observation and Preparation and Application and Instruction

·  Experiencing Education: Analysis and Reflection

Nature of the course: creative and authentic application, hands-on, product rather than test-oriented, community service, cooperative learning, reading and writing on college level, class discussion, practice teaching, real-world based, self-reflection

·  College credit (if you apply and pay the fees to the partner University)

·  Information about scholarships, especially for future teachers

·  Information about psychology, parenting, and instructional strategies

·  Voice/Choice in course work
