CALGARY CONCERTO COMPETITION

Eligibility and Rules (2016)

Open to amateur piano and amateur instrumental students, this yearly event was founded by the Alberta Registered Music Teachers Association (Calgary Branch), the Calgary Chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild and the Calgary Civic Symphony, in order to give performance and rehearsal time with orchestra to winners. A maximum of four winners are chosen, based on their ability to perform with orchestra, their musicianship, and personal involvement. A high standard of performance is expected.

WINNERS will perform with the Calgary Civic Symphony on Sunday April 17th at 2:30p.m. in the Jack Singer Hall.

1.  This competition defines an “Amateur Competitor” as a music student who has neither an agent nor manager and who does not charge a fee for performances with the competition instrument.

2.  Applicants must be studying on a regular basis and continually for the past year at the time of application with a Calgary area music teacher.

3.  Applicants must be 18 years or under on January 1st of the competition year and must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents /landed immigrants or have applied for either.

4.  A competitor may win a maximum of three times but after each win must skip at least two competition years before re-entering whether with the same instrument or another.

5.  A competitor may enter with different instruments, but will be considered a winner with only one instrument.

6.  Participants will present ONE MOVEMENT of a work for Solo Instrument and Orchestra (no slow movements), or a SHORT ONE MOVEMENT WORK. Minimum Grade X difficulty.

7.  Standard repertoire needs no approval, and the choice is the student’s and the teacher’s responsibility. However, problematic orchestral accompaniments must have special approval by contacting Gordon Smith (403-870-2497), who will consult with the orchestra’s music director.

8.  Competitors are responsible for their own accompanist.

9.  You MUST provide TWO (2) COPIES (one of which must be an original) of your music for the Jury (in additional to any copies required for your accompanist), both showing solo and orchestral reduction.

10.  All selections must be performed from memory for both the competition and concert performances.

11.  Winners must perform the competition selection in the final concert. No substitutions allowed.

12.  It is MANDATORY that winners be available on request for ALL rehearsals as scheduled by the orchestra in March /April.

13.  Each participant will receive a written critique of his or her competition performance from each Juror.

14.  More than 50% of the Jurors will be from out of town, or not immediately involved in the musical life of the city. Competitors acknowledge that the conductor of the Calgary Civic Symphony may be one of the Jury members and may provide a coaching session (available to all competitors at each competitor’s option) prior to the competition dates.

15.  The decision of the Jury is final and must not be contested.

16.  COMPETITORS AND ACCOMPANISTS must be prepared to perform at any time during the competition dates. No changes will be considered.

17.  The C3 committee reserves the right to refuse any entry and to make all final decisions.
