August 2012 CAC Call Summary

I. Welcome & Introductions

- We had 43 representatives from 34 Geographic and Special Interest Chapters & Clubs participate on the call.

- Also on the call were Dr. Christine Wilkinson, Theresa Esparza, Jenny Holsman Tetreault, Alissa Pierson, Alison Gabel and Trish Thiele-Keating from the ASU Alumni Association Board and Staff.

II. Updates from the Board and Council – Theresa Esparza

- Theresa welcomed everyone on the call. She is the Chair-Elect to the ASU Alumni Association Board of Directors. Barbara has her Master’s in Taxation and is the Director of Tax for P.F. Chang’s.

- During the May Board of Directors Meeting, the Board approved the following new individuals for a first term on the National Alumni Council:

- Jason Berg, U-Haul

- Michelle Bolton, Phoenix Chamber of Commerce

- Danelle Kelling, Stinson Morrison Hecker, LLP

- Andy Hanshaw, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition

- The Board also approved the following individuals for a first term on the Board:

· Ryan Abbott, Sundt Construction

· Malissia Clinton, The Aerospace Corporation, Los Angeles

· Kathy Duffy Ybarra, The Duffy Group

- The Board also approved the promotion of the following groups:

o Dallas/Ft. Worth Chapter

o Houston Chapter

o Idaho Club

o Indianapolis Club

o New Mexico Club

o North Carolina Club

o Ohio Club

o Seattle Club

o St. Louis Club

o Palestine Connection

o Saudi Arabia Connection

III. Reports from Staff

a. Updates from ASU - Dr. Christine Wilkinson

- ASU welcomed 12,500 new students to campus this week

- Dr. Wilkinson recapped her recent visits with the chapters: Send-Offs in D.C. and LA (Westlake Village), Boat Cruise in Seattle, Scholars orientation with Los Diablos

- Instruction was given to the chapters to contact their cable distributors to request the Pac-12 Network for their game watching venues - http://pac-12.com/AboutPac-12Enterprises/ChannelFinder.aspx.

b. Updates from ASUAA – Jenny Holsman

- Jenny gave an introduction of the 3 new staff members for the Alumni Association (Jason Scott in Membership, Rekha Athreya in Marketing & Communications, and Debby Combs in Accounting)

- Jenny highlighted the top key priorities for FY13 for ASUAA – increase membership by 15% and increase Sparky plate sales by 20%

- The Association welcomed Legacy Scholars from Illinois, Colorado, California, Alaska, and Arizona this year. The Legacy Scholarship is available for students related to Alumni Association members.

c. Chapters & Clubs

i. Reminders for groups in Good Standing, Spirit Kits – Alissa Pierson

- Alissa gave chapters reminders for tasks to complete to remain in good standing (see Board Policy for Alumni Constituents in the Online Toolkit for the complete list)

- Spirit kits are on their way

- The Board of Directors will approve 3 new International Connections this Friday: Puerto Rico, South Africa, and Ontario, Canada

ii. General Communication updates, reminders, announcements – Alison Gabel

- Remember weekly chapter email requests are due by Friday, chapter emails are sent once per week on Wednesdays. The email request form is in the Online Toolkit - http://alumni.asu.edu/groups/online-tool-kit

- Game Watchings will be posted on our general Game Watchings page - http://alumni.asu.edu/events/game-watching and on each chapter’s web page. Event Registration Pages and Calendar Announcement requests are NOT needed for game watchings. You DO need to submit an email request if you want an email reminder to go out to your chapter for your game watching.

- The deadline to submit chapter information for the September issue of the ASU Alumni E-newsletter is September 3. The September e-newsletter will go out to all alumni on Sept. 14

- The next issue of ASU Magazine for which we will collect chapter information is the Feb/Mar issue. The deadline to submit chapter stories and photos is Nov. 8

- Be sure to read Chapter Chat, the e-newsletter that is specifically for all alumni chapter leaders. Chapter Chat goes out the first Friday of each month.

d. Events & Activities – Trish Thiele-Keating & Alissa Pierson

i. 2012 Sun Devil Send-Offs recap

- Successful Sun Devil Send-Off season this summer with 36 Send-offs in the U.S. and our first 2 international Send-Offs in Shanghai & Beijing

- Attendance by 300 students, plus their families, and more than 225 alumni

ii. 2012 Pennies for Points

- People can pledge to donate per point scored by the Sun Devil Football team

- In 2011, Chapters & Clubs brought in $3357.65 through Pennies for Points

- For Fall 2012, Geographic Alumni Chapters & Clubs have awarded more than $18,000 in scholarships to ASU students

- So far 14 Chapters & Clubs will be participating in PFP this fall

iii. Alumni Admissions Ambassadors – Fall Events

- Alumni are asked to volunteer at ASU Admissions events & college fairs around the country. Go to http://tinyurl.com/ASUFall2012Fairs for the complete list of dates & locations for volunteer opportunities.

iv. Fall Forum & Homecoming

- Alumni Chapter & Club leaders are invited to participate in the Fall Forum over Homecoming weekend and to participate in the Homecoming festivities. Application deadline is Aug. 24

2. Homecoming Legends Luncheon

- This year’s luncheon will honor former Sun Devil football players who went on to play in the NFL - http://alumni.asu.edu/events/homecoming.

v. Save the Dates for 2013 events

- Next CAC Call will be in January

- Founders’ Day – February 21, 2013

- ASU Cares Month – March. Alumni chapters & clubs are encouraged to participate in a volunteer event in their community sometime in the month of March

- Pat’s Run Tempe – April 20, 2013. Alumni Shadow Runs should occur on or before this date, in partnership with the Pat Tillman Foundation

- Spring Leadership Conference for Chapters & Clubs – April 26 & 27, 2013

IV. Idea Sharing – All Chapters & Clubs

- New ASU campus in Lake Havasu and the ‘Tree Donation Program’ organized by the Western AZ Alumni Chapter to assist with the landscaping of the new campus

- Two upcoming events with the LA Chapter:
- Oct. 20 – Alumni in Entertainment, with a VIP event preceding a panel of alumni from Cronkite, WPC, Herberger & CLAS. Dr. Crow to attend. The event is scheduled to be held at the Wheel of Fortune studios

- Nov. 9 – Friday night before USC game, “State of the University” presentation by Dr. Crow

- Colorado Chapter mentioned their plans for the ASU @ Colorado game in October. There will be a Wednesday pep rally, and a pre-game party with Sun Devil Club on Thursday.

- Las Vegas offered an invitation for alums to come to the basketball tournament that will take place Nov. 23 & 24, featuring ASU

- Los Diablos advertised their upcoming golf tournament at Karsten on Friday, Nov. 16

- Alissa also highlighted our upcoming Sparky’s Touchdown Tailgates for Missouri, Cal & USC and thanked the chapter leadership in those locations for their hard work in preparation for the events.
