Aims of the Events / It is conservatively estimated that there are around 4,000 young carers in Cheshire West and Chester under 18 years old providing regular care and support in the home to a parent, sibling or other.
A recent Serious Case Review conducted by the LSCB has highlighted the importance of ensuring that these children are identified and that appropriate support is offered. Prior to the publication of that report the LSCB and Cheshire Young Carers are working together to ensure all agencies/organisations and staff working with Children and Families are equipped to recognise and respond to the needs of these young people.
Young Carers undertake a level of commitment and responsibility society would usually associate only with a mature adult, they typically lag behind their peers in emotional, educational and personal development. Left unsupported, young carers face the prospect of disadvantage at key transition stages in their lives impacting their health and wellbeing and future life prospects.
These briefings will provide:
- A standard definition of a young carer and how to identify them
- An outline of the many ways that young carers may be expected to “help out” at home
- A Case Study to highlight thechallenges and impact of being a young carer on their personal lives and education
- An overview of Cheshire Young Carers’ support services and how partner agencies can collaborate with them for the benefit of young carers and their families
