The Health Science program identifies core knowledge and professional ethics essential to all healthcare learners/workers who pursue paths in diagnostic, therapeutic, environmental, and/or informational services. Students are introduced to the healthcare system and prepared for acceptance in post-secondary healthcare education programs and/or entry level employment in healthcare jobs.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Credit - 2

Health Science Continuum (Internship) is a (2) credit course offered to students in 12th grade who have completed a clinical major and have a health career objective leading to immediate employment or post-secondary study. Health Science Internship is designed to be completed in a hospital, extended care facility, rehabilitation center, medical office, imagery laboratory, or other health care facility.

Prerequisite: a minimum of one credit in Clinical Spectrum, or one credit in Clinical Majors, or three credits in biology, advanced biology, chemistry or physics.

COURSE GOALS:

1. To demonstrate basic health care skills

2. To introduce students to career opportunities across the healthcare field.

3. To provide opportunities for students to shadow healthcare professionals, visit Health Care facilities, and practice skills learned in the classroom.

4. Critique workplace readiness skills

5. Prepare student for opportunity to be certified in CPR/First Aid and as a Nursing Assistant.

AVAILABLE STUDENT INDUSTRY CREDENTIAL: Upon completion of Foundations of Health Science, Therapeutic Services, and Health Science Internship classes, the student who meets criteria may be eligible to take the Alabama Certified Nursing Assistant Test offered by Prometric Testing. In order to take the test, students must adhere to professional dress code, complete 16hours of clinical internship at local nursing home, not have any major disciplinary problems, not have more than 5 unexcused absences, maintain a B average in all Health Science courses and pass the CNA practice written test. If any of these criteria are not met the student will be informed of ineligibility for credentialing. If a student wishes to opt out of testing they must sign the consent form. Opting out of the test does not however exempt the student from participation in clinical internship or lab skills check off in class. Clinical internship and lab skills are a component of the internship class and must be passed in order to receive credit for the course.

CLINCIAL INTERNSHIP: ALL Health Science internship students are required to participate in clinical internship job shadow at local health care facilities. This counts as 60% of their grade. Students will complete 16 hours at a long term care facility. They will also job shadow at a local health care facility which is related to their career specific goal. Students must have their own transportation! More specific details will be given to the students.

INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY:

Students will be expected to meet all course goals and demonstrate his/her understanding of each concept presented. Instruction will be application based with discussion, demonstration and doing. Students will work independently to complete day-to-day assignments but may be required to work in groups to complete specials projects, skills, or lab activities.

What are the necessary skills needed to provide basic care in a health care facility?

What are necessary job seeking skills to find and secure employment?

How are legal and ethical issues dealt with in health care?

How is communication and medical language used in healthcare?

ATTENDANCE:

Class attendance is required in accordance to the MCPSS policy. Any student who exceeds 4 excused or 5 unexcused absences without a doctor’s note will be referred to administrator which could lead to loss of credit for course. Just because a student is present at their main school and does not come to the Bryant Center, they are still absent from this class. See Clinical Rules for policy on clinical days.

SKILLS LAB PERFORMANCE TEST:

All skills labs are a component of the content standards and attendance is required. A successful level of skill performance is required. Skills should be satisfactorily demonstrated to the instructor. The student will perform all skills under instructor supervision.

CLASSROOM / LAB SAFETY & SECURITY

All students are expected to become familiar with emergency evacuation procedures, emergency procedures and potential classroom hazards. The instructor will review these procedures in full detail at the beginning of the quarter.

CAREER TECHNICAL STUDENT ORGANIZATION: HOSA is a professional organization directed towards the leadership and professional development of high school and post secondary health related programs. More importantly, HOSA can play an important role in your future career choice. HOSA is an integral part of the Health Science program at the Bryant Center. This organization prepares students for employment by promoting competent, aggressive professional leadership. Its goals include establishing a career objective, developing character, self-confidence, and participating in community service activities. The instructors encourage every student to join. However, membership is optional and requires that members pay $16.00 for dues. The dues go to the state level and national level for membership.

CULMINATING PRODUCT(S):

Students will work on class projects independently as well as in groups.

Guidelines and criteria for evaluating each project will be discussed and given to the student prior to the start of a project. The students will complete the following projects:

1) Letter of Application (Cover Letter), Resume (Completed), Job Application, Essay

2) Mock Interview with proper dress code

3) Clinical Internship With A Passing Grade of “B” with completion of clinical journal

4) Prometric WRITTEN/SKILLS CNA TEST, optional

5) Lab Practical

CLASS/LAB SUPPLIES/ REQUIREMENTS: Scrubs, athletic shoes, 1 ½ inch binder, tab dividers, name tag, MCPSS logo patch, $15 liability insurance fee, $19 CPR fee

Copy of immunization record, Flu vaccine, TB sin test, Must have transportation

ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES EVALUATION / GRADING

Student assessment will be based upon individual completion of daily assignments, classroom participation, skill’s lab activities, test & quizzes. Students will learn how to evaluate his/her own progress and make adjustments as needed. Scheduled test and quizzes will accompany each unit taught in order to test knowledge and/or skill level of each throughout the school grading period. The following numerical and letter grading scale is used to assess and evaluate student knowledge.

GRADING PROCEDURES: 100-90 A, 89-80 B, 79-70 C, 69-60 D, 59-0 E

COURSE OUTLINE

Each student enrolled in HST Continuum is responsible for all of the content standards and objectives listed in the Alabama Course of Study and in this Course Outline. Content standards to be taught each day will be listed on the board (and the student will be given a copy for his/her notebook) for the following topics:

The students will:

1. Demonstrate basic health care skills according to facility protocol. (taking vital signs, CPR, gaining first aid certification, explaining body mechanics)

2. Identify basic treatments for selected diseases and disorders.

3. Critique key workplace readiness skills needed in health care career.

4. Demonstrate legal and ethical behaviors in healthcare setting.

5. Synthesize medical terminology used within the healthcare facility.

6. Utilize electronic methods of communication within healthcare facility.

7. Develop health and wellness plan based on client health history.

8. Analyze medications and treatments of selected clients using medical references to determine classifications, indications, contra-indications, side effects, and dosages.

9. Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills in health care facility ( reporting medical info to immediate supervisor, communicating with client and family)

10. Describe client care procedures, including surgical procedures, Foley catheterizations, and tooth extractions

11. Explain techniques used in selected client situations, including providing bed baths, taking vital signs, performing range of motion exercises, performing physical assessment skills.

ALL students are required to read this syllabus completely, review it with the teacher, sign the attached sheet; have their parents sign the attached sheet, and return the attached sheet to the instructor for a 10 point participation grade.
