Deevabits Kenya Ltd is the leading companyin East and Central Africa in food modernity offering quality, healthy and nutritious rabbit meat products. Deevabits has its own farm and also offers a ready market to all rabbit farmers.Deevabits model’s sole purpose is tocreate and maintain a platform for buying and selling rabbit meatproducts.

Our business idea is to commercially produce, package and sell rabbit meat products which are much healthier and more nutritious than other common meat products available in the market. We are involved in the whole value chain from production to marketing. In addition, we also support smallholder farmers and buy from them using the hub-spoke model; hence empowering them economically.

Over the last two years we have gained experience in the business model and we have developed market linkages with individual clients, hotels and we are looking forward to get into supermarkets. Currently, we supply 4 hotels within Nairobi city and the market is growing steadily. We have also introduced home delivery services, and we have acquired a motorbike for that work. To increase our capacity, we have finished construction of a rabbit breeding unit with a capacity of 1,000 rabbits which we intend to use as a source of breeding rabbit to supply to our breeding farmers.

What problem are we solving?

Kenya has a population of 40 million and growing steadily leading to more land being partitioned further hence reducing available land for cultivation. Africa population is estimated to be more than 2 billion people by 2050. With the growing population, demand for good and healthy food increases. The challenge is that lands have become smaller and scarce. Therefore, we need innovative approaches to produce food with little space, economically and sustainably.

In addition, non-communicable (lifestyle) diseases are on the rise and have become a threat to national health. This has resulted to people becoming more health conscious and are preferring to eat more healthy foods especially low in cholesterol; therefore shying away from red meat. Rabbit meat is a white and lean and it is more nutritious and healthier than chicken and fish. However, its production is very low to meet the growing demand.

Lastly, meat market in Kenya and Africa at large is very informal and of low quality standards. There is a need for a business model that can professionally produce and process quality and healthy meat products; and at the same time improve food security and empower farmers. Africa has potential to produce high quality export branded products that can be sold in the whole region and also in international markets.
