BYOD Implementation
Somerset Independent School District
FAQ
Somerset Independent is in the process of providing another tool for students to use in our classrooms. This initiative involves providing a Wireless Network that can be accessed via personal devices. This network will be available to reinforce and support classroom instruction while improving opportunities for students to become College and Career Ready.
FAQ:
Where will this service be available?
Initially it will be on the Somerset High School Campus, but we are in the process of expanding to Hopkins Elementary and Meece Middle School. We are also working on a “guest access” solution.
When will this service be available?
(This service is currently available at SHS during school hours.)
What types of Devices will be able to connect?
Laptops, iPods, iPads, iPhones, Kindles, Nooks, and Android Based Devices (A limit of 2 Devices per user can be registered.)
How will students connect?
Once a signed AUP(Acceptable Use Policy Document(08.2323 AP. 1, AP. 21) and an Acceptance of Responsibility and Device Use Agreement(08.2323 AP. 11) is on file for an individual then a student would use their School Log-In Credentials to log onto the Somerset_Public Network. Any violation of network use would result in privileges being revoked.
What type of access will students have?
Students will have a Proxied/Filtered Internet Access that emulates what they see when they use a district owned device.
Will ALL devices be able to connect?
The quick answer is yes…which means that if a student has a device that doesn’t have 3 or 4G connectivity, but has WI-FI then that device is going to be able to download and upload items.
Of course, the district will not be able to provide technical service on any personal device should it have issues with connectivity.
What happens if a Personal Device is damaged or lost?
Total responsibility is accepted by the parent/student when the Acceptance of Responsibility and Device Use Agreement (08.2323 AP.11) is completed.
Will my child be penalized if he/she does not own a Personal Device?
Students will continue to have access to District Owned Devices and teachers are required to plan accordingly.
Will students be able to use a Personal Device in every classroom/every day?
The integration of BYOD with daily instructional practices is at the discretion of the classroom teacher. (This is true for all resources within a classroom.)
Why has the district decided to do this?
Our goal is to provide instructional resources that enhance and enrich learning opportunities for students. We are diligently trying to fulfill this goal while meeting the CIPA(Child Internet Protection Act) and SB230 requirements.
