COMCAST GIVES RURAL CHILDCARE CENTER A MAKEOVER

Comcast volunteers as RCMA’s Bonita Springs Migrant Head Start Center

BONITA SPRINGS, FL – April 25, 2009 – Armed with paintbrushes and an assortment of yard tools, 180 volunteers from Comcast Cable of Southwest Florida today provided a makeover to a childcare center for farmworker children, as part of the eighth annual Comcast Cares Day event during Comcast’s National Volunteer Week.

The volunteers painted the building exterior, helped with landscaping and playground mulching, and performed other much-needed chores at the Redlands Christian Migrant Association’s Bonita Springs Migrant Head Start Center, which serves approximately 40 children. Several farmworker parents worked side by side with the Comcast volunteers. Comcast spent some $2,000 on the materials and provided a barbecue lunch for the volunteers.

“Comcast understands the importance of improving the communities where our employees and customers live and work,” said Barbara Hagen, area vice president/general manager of Comcast of Southwest Florida. “We’re extremely proud of our employees who have selflessly committed to giving their time and to work alongside the Redlands Christian Migrant Association to power the dreams of Southwest Florida.”

Based in Immokalee, RCMA provides quality child care and early education for more than 2,000 children in Collier, Lee, Hendry and Glades counties, among some 8,000 infants and children the association serves in 21 Florida counties.

“We are delighted to have such strong support from Comcast,” said Barbara Mainster, executive director of RCMA. “Given the cost of the materials and the value of the free labor, Comcast and its employees have given us a very generous gift. We are also grateful to the National Council of La Raza, the nation’s largest Latino civil rights organization, because its partnership with Comcast is what made this happen!”

Founded in 1965 in the Redlands farming area of Miami-Dade County, RCMA is a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization that is funded by local, state and federal grants, as well as the generosity of businesses, individuals, the United Way, the Naples Children & Education Foundation, and other foundations and organizations.
