BBC library book club
East Sussex, West Sussex and Surrey Libraries have teamed up with BBC Radio Sussex & Surrey for a monthly book club. The Book Club is broadcast on Allison Ferns’ Afternoon show; the first Wednesday of the month. The feature goes out between 2 and 2:30pm when Allison is joined by one of our librarians.
The book for December was Anne Enright’s critically acclaimed‘The Green Road’, the story of four siblings returning to the west coast of Ireland for one final family Christmas before their childhood home is sold. Our librarian, Henry, spoke about the book on the radio last week, and listeners heard about how the book’s plot surprised both Allison and Henry.
If you missed it, there is still time tocatch up with the show. You can hear the book review from 2hours 10minutes into the show.
The Book for January is'The Power'by Naomi Alderman, the show will be broadcast 1st February on Allison Ferns’ Afternoon show between 2 and 2.30pm. You can join the discussion and share your thoughts on the book, call 03459 57 00 57 or text RADIO and your message to 81333, or
All books featured in the BBC book club are available from East Sussex libraries.

Books I have loved
This month our Principal Library Officer, Ceris, tells us about a book she has read and loved:
“I picked 'Stuffocation' up because I was planning to declutter in the New Year (inspired by Marie Kondo’s 'The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying' – also a great read). However, this is less of a “how to get rid of stuff” book, more of an exploration of why we accrue so much “stuff” in the first place and what we might be able to do about it. It’s a thought-provoking read, digging into the sociological and environmental impact of our consumer society. With just the right mix of amusing anecdote, inspirational stories and up to date research it is, unusually for non-fiction, a real page turner and I found it difficult to put down.
It inspired me, yes, to declutter, but more than that, to question the source of the clutter, particularly at Christmas time with the gifts spilling out from under the tree and the children wading through piles of plastic. James Wallman doesn’t provide the answers to your untidy cutlery drawer or overstuffed garage (Marie Kondo has all those answers and more) but he will get you thinking and maybe aspiring to be an “experientialist” rather than just another consumer.”
Both James Wallman’s 'Stuffocation' and Marie Kondo’s 'The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying' are available from East Sussex libraries, and as an E-book from ourE-library.
