Australia Day Citizen of the Year – Vince Gauci
26 January 2015
Broken Hill Community Foundation founding member Vince Gauci has been named Broken Hill’s Citizen of the Year at the city’s official Australia Day ceremony.
Mayor Wincen Cuy said Mr Gauci had given so much back to the city where he received his start and went on to become one of Australia’s most respected mining managers.
“Broken Hill has exported an amazing amount of talent – great contributors to corporate Australia and Vince Gauci is one of those people born and bred in this great city who went on to be a significant leader in Australia’s mining industry.
“He is man who has never forgotten his start to a wonderfully successful corporate career, giving back so generously to our city through the establishment of the Broken Hill Community Foundation,” Mayor Cuy said.
“While Vince now lives “away”, his heart is very much in the Hill – and he is passionate about seeing this city survive and thrive. He comes “home” around four times a year to oversee the progress the foundation has made in supporting people and business in what is a continuing challenge of economic diversification.”
Mayor Cuy said the Australia Day celebrations highlighted the wonderful people who made up the Broken Hill community.
“Through the highs and lows we have people in our city who want to help others, support our youth and importantly have a passion for our city to succeed. Our awards on Australia Day show that we are in very good hands with people taking up the challenge of not only supporting, but developing programs and doing the hard yards to see them come to fruition.”
Those also honoured at the awards ceremony were: Michael Bruggy, Laurie Camilleri, Joshua Harvey, David Lee, Ann Rogers, Howard Steer, Peter Stewart, Jenny Treloar and Joyce Williams.
