Humanities: Classical Era

Athens/Sparta brochure Due:__________________

Pretend you work for the Chamber of Commerce of a classical Greek city-state, and your job is to promote the city-state to potential new residents. Using the internet (see link on course website called “Athens vs. Sparta info”), class notes, your textbook and/or books from the school library, prepare an electronic brochure (see the Trifold brochure Google template) on either classical Sparta or classical Athens. Tell about its advantages to the prospective new resident, and include practical information that would be helpful for new residents to know. Write in the present tense, as if you lived in the classical era and are writing for an audience also in the classical era. You may want to contrast your city-state with the other city-state to highlight your city-states’ advantages. Use your creativity!

You may work with one partner. Grading will be based on the following criteria:

§ demonstrates knowledge of a city-state in terms of its strengths; include descriptions of at least seven of the following: 1) cultural activities (such as theater, music and the arts) 2) other recreation 3) athletics/ sports 4) architecture/famous sites 5) geography/climate 6) school curriculum 7) daily life 8) social and/or gender rights/roles 9) political system 10) accomplishments

§ looks professional, is visually attractive (if you don’t have a color printer, you can use colored pencils)

§ optional: consider including an “alerts” section on some of the negative aspects of this city-state

§ includes at least three pictures (one should be a map)

§ “markets” the city, yet is accurate

§ fills both sides of the page (maximum 12-point font!) – not too much white space!!

§ includes a works cited with at least two sources (can be included on the brochure or attached as a separate document, doesn’t have to be MLA format)
