ATH. NT MASTERS REPORT ON AMA CHAMPIONSHIP

HOBART 2014

Pre Championship

The final TTT of 2013 attracted many new faces to attempt master’s athletics and many of these were added to our newsletter mail out list. It was through the newsletter that we promoted the 2014 event and 14 wanted to participant. Unfortunately due to injury and work commitments this dropped to 9 travellers -one less than 2013.

Training

Training was very much an individual thing with some gathering on a Wednesday and Sunday for sprints jumps and throws and others doing their usual thing with local coaches including Klaus, Bowden and the DRW.

Athlete Registration and Travel

Athlete registration and travel were individual responsibilities. The online process provided by the event management was easy. Cheaper travel is available when booking early or sometimes being prepared to take long routes.

Accommodation

Varying hotels not far from track, caravan park and host families – Tower Motel had good prices and close proximity. All athletes made own bookings.

Uniforms

Athletes used last year’s or purchased through the Cricket and Football Shop at Winnellie.

Results

Our team won 35 medals with Katherine girls winning 16 between them after entering 23 events. Nicole Simons was our most successful with 11 individual medals then Kelly Rosas with 7.

Our distance runners, known to us as the BIG THREE, were outstanding. Darren Peacock (4G), Allan Long (4G) and Ian Cameron (4G1S) all produced world class results. Ian was our most outstanding athlete with his 1500m gold run scoring a 93.13% on the age calculator. This run would have placed him 3rd in last year’s World Championship held in Brazil. Indeed his 1500m (3rd), 800m (12th), 5000m (4th) and 8km XC (9th) would all have placed him the finals at last year’s worlds. Allan’s time in the 10000m would have placed him 2nd at last year’s worlds, 7th in 5000m and 11th in the 8km XC. Darren would have been a finalist in the 1500, 5th in 5000m, 8th in the 8km XC. HOW GOOD IS THAT!! But it doesn’t stop.

Craig Green’s result in the 400m (2nd) would have placed him 6th at last year’s Worlds. His 200m was a 85.29% on age calculator and he placed 3rd at this AMA. Jon Schatz 1.65m HJ and gold would have placed him 4th at last year’s world.

And that leaves our most senior representative Nola Brockie, who won two gold!

DAMN GOOD TEAM EFFORT!

Best Quote

Ian Cameron after winning the 1500m in a blistering time – “That was nearly as good as getting the senior card!” (Ian has Scottish origins)

NT records –

The 2014 team established 24 NT records. Kelly was top of the list with 8 new NT records to her name.

Athletes Forum

This year’s forum had two competing athletes speak. The first covered training and injuries stressed the importance of 1. Modifying training to age. Not possible to train maximumally 2. Stretching – holding stretches and working hammies. 3. Using resistance training (weights) The second was an ex Olympian – very motivational – stressed the lifestyle of athletics and the fun she had running with her mother who was also a master athlete.

Timing of event was broached and survey on completion of event was mentioned.

Ath. NT Support

Our parent body was again supportive with $1800 team support.

Media

A pre-tournament media alert bought resulted in radio interviews on ABC and FM 101.1 and the local Darwin paper placing a post event story.

Team Dinner

All but one of your team sat for dinner and some social time at La Pochettes in Nth Hobart. It was a great night full of laughs and support.

Last year many of the team went to the AMA Awards night and I would encourage our future members to do so. It brings a chance for athletes to meet and get to know other state members.

Photos

Official photos for the AMA championships can be viewed and purchased at Anita Welch Photography. A collage of team shots will follow in an additional email as many emails from last newsletter bounced back due to the newsletter having photos.

Recommendations

1.  Ath. NT purchase weighted throws.

2.  Start now for 2017 home AMA – seek relay teams and individual competitors.

Summary

An amazing weekend in a beautiful city with outstanding NT representatives, gracious and hospital hosts and officials from both Tassie Masters and AMA. Two world records were established during the meet in distance running for 70-74 women.
