PhD (Doctor of Philosophy):
ADMISSION

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program usually prepares students for advanced work in research, teaching, and administration. The primary purpose of the PhD program is to develop an understanding of science beyond the Master's degree, with particular emphasis on the conduct of original research, the production of significant research findings, and the contribution of such findings to public knowledge.

Regular PhD Admission Requirements:

1. Master's degree from an accredited institution. Students must submit official transcripts as evidence.

2. Minimum quality of grade point average (GPA). International students’ quality point average is normally calculated on the basis of equivalency from universities that use a different from the US scale.

3. Submission of scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the last five years.

4. International students must submit evidence of competence in the English language. A minimum score of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required. In addition, some university policies require that international students be retested on English language abilities upon arrival at the university. Those who apply to Teaching Assistantship may be asked to take a Test of Spoken English (TSE) in addition to TOEFL.

5. Normally three references from persons in the professional and academic communities.The Committee on Doctoral Studies may, on occasion, require additional references.

As evidence of the ability to undertake doctoral work, the student's application usually is required to be accompanied by an essay (approximately 1,000 – 1,500 words) indicating, as specifically as possible, the student's academic and professional goals in relation to the Department’s doctoral program and identifying potential areas and/or topics in which the student expects to pursue dissertation research.

8. A complete curriculum vitae that provides an overview of education, work, publication, and other professional activities.

9. Usually examples of scholarly research or professional writing are required.The student should describe fully any published or unpublished research, thesis, contributions to the professional or scholarly literature, and other professional or academic experience relevant to an assessment of his or her capacity to pursue doctoral study successfully.

10. If the candidate has had appropriate professional work experience a brief description sometimes is required.

11. A telephone interview may constitute part of the admissions process at the request of the Admissions and Review Committee or of the applicant.
