At Home Preparation and Materials Listed by Lesson

The list below is a comprehensive list of materials needed for each lesson included with The Family School – Year 1 Literature course. It does not include the general materials listed in your course syllabus or the materials for the Enrichment section of each lesson, however.

Lesson 1: The Princess and the Pea

· Frozen or fresh peas (3 for each child)

· Pillow for each child

· Place the children’s pillows around the room so there is room enough for them to lie down with their heads on the pillows. Place peas inside a baggie or plastic wrap and put them underneath to pillow, inside the pillowcase, so they won’t be easily discovered.

Lesson 2: Turnips and Elves—Serving

· One turnip

· A favorite book that your preschoolers enjoy or have enjoyed hearing repeatedly

· Several fairy tales to read during reading time

Lesson 3: The Fisherman and His Wife

· Arrange to give one of your children a snack or treat (enough for everyone) as part of the introduction to the lesson. Instruct the child not to share the snack but to eat a little of it while the rest of the children get none. Make sure there is enough treat to share later in the introduction.

· Copy and cutout 1-3d—Handout: Fish Cutouts from above. On each fish write either a worldly possession your children may value or a righteous act they do or could do. Put a large paper clip or magnet on each fish.

· Create a fishing pole with a stick, a string, and a magnet tied to the loose end of the string.

· Gather a plate, a bowl, a comb, and a piece of soap.

· A copy of the picture book “The Rough-Face Girl” by Rafe Martin. Or use 16c—Story: Rough-Face Girl.

· Scrapbook paper for the pretty heart envelopes and letters. You may want to cut out the hearts in advance.

Lesson 7: Psalm 100

· Prepare to sing “Count Your Many Blessings,” (Hymns of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 241).

· Become familiar with the tune for the “Old Hundredth.” (It is the same tune as the one used for “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow” in Hymns of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 242.) The accompaniment can be found on lds.org.

Lesson 11: Creating a Strong Family

· Reading Assignment: Before the lesson, read the first chapter aloud of Little House in the Big Woods

· Optional: Prepare a story or stories of you or your ancestors lives, focusing on the setting in which they lived. Relate how you or they were in the right place and right time for the Lord’s purposes to be accomplished.

Lesson 12: Work and Wholesome Recreational Activities

Lesson 13: Celebrations and Traditions

· Reading Assignment: Read chapters 4 and 5 before this lesson.

· Using the person or event you chose in Link 1-13a—Celebration: What happened today? to plan a small celebration about the person or event—perhaps balloons, a picture of the person or event, a small treat, songs, or quick game that goes along with the event.

· Find and underline in the book with your red pen, the ideas about celebrations and traditions discussed in the lesson.

· Prepare to tell the children of how a family tradition (family home evening, family or personal prayer, family or personal scripture study, etc.) has blessed your life.

Lesson 14: Literary Elements

· Reading Assignment: Read chapters 6 and 7 before this lesson.

· Using your literature pens, find and underline the quotes used for each section of the lesson in your copy of the book, so they’ll be easy to find when you talk about them.

· Colored pencils—each child will need a red, pink, purple, green, orange, and blue pencil. They may share as long as there are enough of each color to allow them to use them frequently.

· Prepare to read or tell your favorite parable from Christ’s teachings. Be able to name the setting, plot, character, theme, and if possible, the style of the parable.

· The children will need their copies of the literary pens handout from Foundation Lesson 4. If you are studying the character section, they will also need the sample character chart from the foundation lesson. Have the children take the pages they need out of their notebooks before the lesson begins so they can refer to them.

Lesson 15: Cooperation

· Reading Assignment: Read chapter 8 before this lesson.

· Prepare to play “The Great Divide” activity by choosing where you will play the game and making the line which everyone will cross. No materials are needed, but be familiar with the instructions in the attention activity below.

· 3 x 5 cards or other similar size pieces of paper, two for each child.

Lesson 19: Celebration

· Gather pioneer clothing for you and your children. Someone you know may have clothing from a pioneer trek or you can use simple clothing, like a baby blanket for a shawl for the girls and a bandana as a neckerchief for the boys.

Lesson 20: Bambi Greets the World

· Read chapters 1-3 of Bambi aloud to your children before you start today’s lesson.

Lesson 21: Lessons in Listening

· Bean bag or other small toy you can easily throw from person to person

· (Optional) Prepare in advance to play 1-21e—Video: Robin Song. Have your computer open to the proper link and ready to play. Have the volume very low. You will need to be able to turn on the sound without your children noticing that you are doing so. You don’t want to draw attention to the bird’s song. The children should not be able to see the picture.

Lesson 22: A Time of Trial

· Read chapters 7-9 of Bambi aloud to your children before you start today’s lesson.

· A heavy object (about 5 lbs for younger children and 10 for older)

· A piece of yarn or string cut into ½ inch pieces—one piece for each child.

· Prepare to tell your children about a trial you have had and how it blessed you.

Lesson 31: Patience

· Before class read The Comedy of Errors Act 3.

· Small tent (perhaps a play tent, a table covered with blankets, a sheet hung over a line, a small one-man tent, etc. If possible have the tent have a door of some kind. Set up the tent in your lesson area before class begins. Put one snack or serving of a snack for each child in the tent.

· Enough snacks or treats for each child to have three (or three servings). The third snack or serving should be larger than the other two.

· Something that can act as a door—a couch pillow, a chair, a sheet hung in the center of a string that stretches from wall to wall, a couch.

· (Optional) Simple costumes that will identify the actors in our simplified scene. It can be something as simple as a piece of colored paper pinned to the chest of each actor. The two Dromios should have the same color and the two Antipholuses should have the same color.

Lesson 32: Stock Characters in Comedy

· Before you begin this lesson, read The Comedy of Errors Act 4 scene 1 and 2.

· Long piece of rope (or something that you can use to wrap up or “bind” a child)

· String or yarn (for record activity)

Lesson 33: Our True Identity

· Read Comedy of Errors Act 4 scenes 3 and 4 before this lesson.

· Who Am I? Activity. Write a series of ten statements for each child starting with “this person…” Print the statements and cut them apart. Two or three of the statements should apply to all the children. The rest should apply to each child specifically. For example, “This person belongs to the (give your last name) family” for a general statement, and “This person likes to play with Legos” for a specific statement. Include “This person is a child of God” for each child.

Lesson 34: Separation and Reconciliation

· Read The Comedy of Errors Act 5 before you begin the lesson.

· 20+ items for each child to separate into groups (anything you can divide by color works well—M&M’s, Skittles, buttons, beads, colored marshmallows, pieces of paper, etc.) The 20 items do not have to be evenly divided by color, just make sure you have 4 or more colors in each group for the child to separate.)

Lesson 35: The Comedy of Errors Celebration

· Prepare for any of the following:

· Renaissance games included marbles, tag, hide and go seek, walking on stilts, climbing over things, leap frog, and swimming. “Marbles” is a Cub Scout belt loop. You could include the requirements for the belt loop in your celebration. (Google “cub scout belt loops.”)

· You may want to use the costumes could have made for enrichment experiences such as 1-30k—Costume: Elizabethan Ruffled Collar and 1-32 Simple costumes that will identify the actors in a simplified scene.
