OBJECTIVE:

For this assignment you will have the opportunity to learn more about a psychological disorder that is not covered in this course. You will pick a disorder from the list given to you and you will conduct research to investigate the following topics:

· Diagnostic criteria of the disorder

· Brief history/background information

· Epidemiology

· Etiology

· Treatment

A. DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA ( points)

· Please describe the diagnostic criteria utilized to diagnose this disorder. You can utilize the DSM-IV TR diagnostic criteria or the ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases) diagnostic criteria. One thing to keep in mind is that when using a Culture Bound Syndrome, finding the diagnostic criteria may be difficult. Please cite where you found your criteria.

B. History/Background ( points)

· Please provide a brief description about the history of the disorder. Things to look for are a) when was the disorder established, b) what were the reasons for creating this disorder, c) did this disorder “exist” as a different disorder in the past, etc. You can talk about any controversies that have existed surrounding this disorder in this section. Please cite your information.

C. Epidemiology ( points)

· Please provide epidemiological statistics (prevalence, incidence, lifetime prevalence) for your disorder. You need to provide a) overall prevalence data, b) gender difference data, and c) data on at least 2 subgroups of your choice (e.g. African-Americans & Asian-Americans, or children & adults). Please cite your information.

D. Etiology ( points)

· Please provide information about the etiological theories of your disorder. Your answer should include at least 2 different approaches/perspectives about the cause of the disorder you chose. Please cite your information.

E. Treatment ( points)

· Please describe at least 2 treatment approaches to your disorder. Your response should provide a brief explanation of how the treatment targets your disorder. Please cite your information.

F. Reference Page ( points)

· Please include an APA works cited page at the end of your assignment. This works cited page does not count towards your page limit. Refer to APA citation handout or come see me if you have questions about proper APA citations.

· At least 2 of your references must come from peer reviewed scholarly journals. Other information can come from other sources EXCEPT Wikipedia. Refer to Academic Journal list handout for ideas about where to find acceptable articles for this assignment.

G. Writing Quality and Format ( Points ) . Be sure to follow the formatting guidelines below when writing your essay. Failure to follow these formatting guidelines will result in point deductions!

· The total length of your submission (for both questions combined) should not exceed 4 pages.

· Responses should be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins. Points will be taken off for not following format instructions.

· Separate subtopics or content areas by numbered sections.

· Spelling, grammar, and writing quality count (see grading rubric below).

· Attach a final page to your submission containing ONLY your name, section and Net ID at the end of assignment. DO NOT include this information elsewhere in your document.

· No email submissions will be accepted. Please refer to syllabus for late submission policy.

Overall Writing Quality ( Points)

The assignment will be evaluated on the basis of grammar, spelling, and quality of writing, using the following guidelines

3 points: There is no more than 1 major grammatical error in the response. Wording is clear, concise, and precise. No misspellings present, and the writing flows well and is engaging to the reader. Proper format is followed.

2 points: There are no more than 2 of each of the following errors: grammatical, misspelling and formatting. Most ideas are conveyed clearly and precisely, and content is generally adequately organized, even if slightly choppy at times.

1 point: There may be several grammatical, misspelling and/or formatting errors. Wording is frequently vague, sloppy, or awkward. Organization of ideas is adequate and facilitates basic comprehension.
