Date for Strings Auditions: Saturday, October 30, 2010

Location: Oakdale Middle School, 511 N. Dixieland Road, Rogers, AR 72756

Fee: $4 per student to audition, cash or check payable to ‘ASBOA’

The North Region Orchestra Clinic will be held at Bentonville High School on

November 12-13; pl ease make sure you are available to attend if you are going to audition

R EGISTRATION :

1. All schools must be registered with the ASBOA, with the yearly registration payment received through the ASBOA Office, in order for students to be eligible to attend the auditions. Strings students must be bona fide members of their school’s Orchestra program to be eligible to attend auditions. Strings students whose schools do not offer an Orchestra class should refer to the ASBOA Individual String Registration Form.

2. Students must be registered in advance by their director using the ‘North Region Orchestra Registration Form – STRINGS ONLY’ form (posted on the ASBOA website). Please submit the Excel file as an attachment via email to the address on the form to register your group/student. Payment for the whole group must be mailed to the address on the form. Both registration and payment are due 15 days before the audition date. Students will not be allowed to participate in the audition until they have paid the audition fee.

A UDITION DAY SCHEDULE :

7:45-8:30 am - Registration (only necessary for individual string students and directors who need to report students who did not show up)

Students look up their randomly pre-assigned audition time and warm up in the gym

8:00 am - Directors’ Meeting

8:30 am - Tryout material and scales posted

9:00 am - First auditions begin

Scores will be posted throughout the day as each instrument’s results have been checked and tallied.

***It is the director’s responsibility to pick up the ir students’ score sheets and music folders at the end of the audition day. For students who do not have an Orchestra program at their school, it is the responsibility of their sponsor/parent to pick up their students’ score sheets and music folders at the end of the audition day. They will NOT be mailed. ***

A UDITION R EMINDERS :

· Students will play prepared pieces first (in whatever order the student chooses), then scales (in the order listed), and then sight-reading. For instruments that have two audition rooms, the first room will be for prepared pieces and the second room will be for scales and sight-reading.

· Scales must be performed from memory, and must be performed in the order posted.

· Students will be given 20 seconds to look over the sight-reading material.

· Absolutely no talking in the audition room – questions or problems may be addressed with the outside monitor.

· No warm-up will be allowed in the tryout room. Prior to playing an exercise, scale or sight-reading the student will be allowed to play its first note as a sustained note. No repeated rhythmical variation of that note will be allowed.

· A student who misses their audition time will receive a 5% deduction of their overall score, and will be allowed to audition at the next available time, which may not be until the end of the audition day.
