Elementary Education Application Materials
1. List of Prior experiences working with students at the age level you want to teach is mandatory. This requirement enables you to work with children and reflect upon this experience. It also enables the EDCI Admission Committee to assess your potential to become a good teacher. This list should be submitted in resume style on a separate piece of paper. (EDCI 280 will also fulfill this requirement.) If you do not have experience working with children in the age group you intend to teach and wish to gain some experience, please check with the Community Service Program Office in 0110 Stamp Student Union for opportunities to volunteer in the local community.
2. Goal Statement: All 3 questions (see a., b., c. below) must be answered in no more than 2 pages and not less than 1 page--double spaced. Your goal statement should be free of spelling, punctuation, or syntax errors. If you need help in writing your goal statement, please go to the Writing Center, 0125 Taliaferro Hall.
a. What does it mean to be a good teacher to all students?
b. What do you need to know and be able to do to become a good teacher?
c. What do YOU need to learn to be a good teacher?
3. Three letters of recommendation must be submitted with your application. Letters should be from former employers, faculty, or others who can address your potential as a teacher. Letters must be on letterhead stationery and should contain a telephone number where the department can reach the writer if further information is necessary. Please make personal copies before submitting letters.
4. Degree Audit Request: Please submit a Degree Audit Request with this application. Audit Request Forms are available in the Office of Student Services, Room 1204 Benjamin.
5. Application deadline is May 1. Applications must be complete when they are turned in to the Office of Student Services in Room 1204 Benjamin. Since it usually takes 4-6 weeks for scores to be reported, you should take the Praxis no later than the April test date to apply in the May 1 deadline. The Department may hold applications for receipt of the current semester’s grade point average and for Praxis I scores in special circumstances, i.e. second degree students and transfer students who will have all pre-professional coursework completed at the end of their first semester at UMCP.
Please note that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into the Professional Teacher Education program in Elementary Education.
