AP SUMMER WORK 2016

As of now, AP Spanish is scheduled for the full year, every other day. Take a few weeks off as a vacation from school and Spanish, and then get into a routine! During the summer you must focus on your Spanish skills. What you don’t actively use, you will lose! (Talk to yourself every day in Spanish, think in Spanish!). To complete these assignments during the last days of the summer or just before class begins will defeat the purpose! The objectives of the summer assignments are:

· To become familiar with the AP Spanish exam format

· To practice your Spanish skills during the summer so that you will

not slip in proficiency

· To expand your vocabulary via authentic readings and thematic

vocabulary

·To become comfortable with regular speaking and listening

It is expected that you complete this summer assignment in preparation for AP Spanish. Please understand that you will be held accountable for this work (counted as your first test grade) and not completing it will jeopardize your grade in the class.

ALL SUMMER LONG (from JULY 5th on)

1) Journal Keeping for Writing and Vocabulary Growth

You will keep a journal (handwritten either in a notebook or on sheets of paper) over the summer/fall with a minimum of 1 entry of at least one paragraph in length a week from July through August. The topic can be anything of your choosing. For example, you can write about your opinions on a certain topic, describe your day, or just write a mini-story. Try to vary your tenses. It is expected that you use a dictionary and look up new words to use each time to broaden your vocabulary base (VERY important!!). Your journal will count as a grade. I will be looking that you have made a strong effort, varied vocabulary and verb tenses, and completed it! There should be at least 7 long entries.

2) Listening and Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Growth

Spend 15 minutes per weekday viewing videos and completing listening activities at the following sites:

http://www.rtv.org.mx/# (scroll to middle of the page and click on TV más en línea)

http://wwitv.com/television/191.htm (pick a channel and go to it to see the programming)

http://www.cmtv.com.ar/tv_envivo/ (music videos and more from Argentina)

http://www.tvn.cl/servicios/senal/2010/index.html (National TV station of Chile)

http://msnlatino.telemundo.com/

http://www.univision.com/

http://www.spanishlistening.org

I will also post a link to a video that you can use for your lists.

You can use the same sites or these sites to read at least 4 articles a week:

http://cvc.cervantes.es/aula/lecturas/intermedio/ (click on a book at it will take you to another screen; then click on “texto”)

http://elpais.com/elpais/portada_america.html

http://www.spanish.cl/reading.htm (you can either click on the Spanish Reading Passages or further down there are readings on about different holidays- don’t use the reading for the teacher)

From these listening and reading resources, write down the names of the videos you view / articles you read and 5 words in Spanish and English that you learned per session. You should have a list of at least 50 words per week, that is, a minimum of 5 fifteen minute sessions and 4 articles a week. Place each week's vocab on a page with a heading of the title and the date completed. By the time school begins, you should have a least 7 lists of 50 vocabulary words = 350 new words!!.

Vary your viewing and reading to include the following themes that appear on the AP Spanish exam:

1. Science and Technology

2. Contemporary Life

3. Family and Community

4. Beauty and Aesthetics

5. Global Challenges

6. Personal and Public Identities

3) AP Spanish Exam Prep:

a) Take time to familiarize yourself with the format; paste this into your browser: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/apcourse/ap-spanish-language/exam-practice

4) Email (due by July 22nd)

Send me an email (via attachment) that describes what type of learner you are. Describe what classes you have taken in high school so, and what classes you liked best (past tense with pretérito and imperfecto). Also, explain what you want to learn in college and what you plan to do with it (futuro). (100 words) Make it formal voice (Ud.) when addressing me! Don’t use a translator – bad habits will develop for AP!

5) Persuasive essay (due August 12th)

Rent a Spanish movie and watch it. You can find movies on Nexflix or Youtube also if you can’t rent one. Write me a 200 word essay outlining the plot of the movie and convincing me to watch it or why to avoid it. Use lots of new vocabulary (opinion vocab, convincing points, etc…). Email me this essay by way of attachment by August 12th!

Be sure all work in packet is complete. Remember this is a graded 150 point project.
