5) Vietnam War: Briefly discuss the origins of the Vietnam War. Who fought in the first Indochina War? Who won? Who fought in the second Indochina War (a.k.a. the Vietnam War? Who won? Briefly explain the results of the Vietnam War.

q Main cause: A decolonization conflict between opposing forces of capitalism & communism

q First Indochina War was fought in 1954. Vietnam defeated Franceà Vietnam divided into communist north and non-communist south.

q Second Indochina War (this is what we call the Vietnam War): The U.S. stepped in to keep communism out of South Vietnam. After a stalemate and truce was declared in 1973, the U.S. pulled out most troops (similar to what we’ll do in Iraq at the end of next year). In 1975 the communist north defeated the non-communist south.

6) China and Japan in the Cold War : How did the Cold War affect China and Japan?

q China: 1949 Mao defeats Chiang Kai Shekàcommunist government, economy, society

q 1958-1960: Great Leap Forward policy failed à 20 million deaths!!

q Due to failure of Great Leap Forward, people criticized Mao. This criticism à Cultural Revolution (describe it) which was put in effect to stop criticism against Mao; Red Guards (describe the role of these students) attacked leaders and teachers critical of Mao.

q Though both were communists, relationship between China and USSR turned sour. Explain.

q China focused on rural economy and peasants; USSR focused on industrial economy and factory workers; sever lack of freedom of speech on both countries.

q Japan: couldn’t have a military force after WW II. This saved them much $$$$$$$à development of steel production, electricity, ship building, electronic consumer goods.
