Chimenea Care

Our Chimenea’s are handmade in Mexico. They were originally used as bread ovens, but today they lend warmth and atmosphere to outdoor living. The ambiance they create is marvelous. The chimenea is perfect for the entire spring, summer, and fall seasons. They are a great conversation piece when entertaining.

· Always keep your chimenea in the metal stand and on level ground.

· BEFORE THE FIRST FIRE: Fill your chimenea with 5” to 6” of sand; this gives you a base to build your fire on so the hot coals are not sitting directly on the clay. Every chimenea bought at Wolf Hill comes with a free bag of sand; don’t forget to bring it home with you!

· Build your fire in the center of the bowl to prevent hot spots.

· Cure your chimenea by building two or three small fires before having a large fire. You may burn wood or compressed logs in your chimenea. Do not use flammable fluids to start your fires.

· Let your fire burn itself out when you are done; putting water on it will cause an extreme change in temperature of the clay and could result in cracking.

· We recommend that you seal the outside of your chimenea once a year with a concrete sealer or floor wax; this prevents the water penetration through the clay. Your chimenea comes sealed.

· In the winter, you can still use your chimenea but we recommend that you cover it or store it out of the elements when not in use. The constant freezing and thawing of snow and rain on an exposed chimenea could result in cracking.

· Remember the outside of your chimenea is hot when there is a fire in it, so always supervise children when in use.
