Student Progress Report: Jim

123 Middle School Term 3
Grade: 7 Div: 8 June 2004

Personal Intelligences (Inter and Intrapersonal, Existentialist Intelligence)

Jim says: “I get along well with everyone. I know my strengths and my challenges.”
The Teachers Say: “Jim is right, he is a great friend to everyone. Throughout the term he has contributed significantly to our class meetings and discussions. When Jim is focused, he is a deep thinker and poses high level questions – we appreciate his ability to help his group mates make sense of complex ideas.”

Science - Naturalist Intelligence

Jim says: “I learned about ecosystems and the effects we are having on them. My challenge is researching but I think I’m meeting expectations.”
The Teachers Say: “This term we have studied the natural resources involved in the development of Steveston, particularly the fishing industry and the use of the waterways. Jim’s sensitivity extends to his reflections on nature and environmental issues. He is able to understand how communities live off the natural resources of their surroundings, and the balance required for interdependence.”

English Language Arts - Verbal Linguistic Intelligence

Jim says: “I am trying to get better. I have been reading since kindergarten, but my challenge is writing!”
The Teachers Say: “Jim’s right, he has worked hard this term on improving his written expression. Although this is still something that challenges Jim, he definitely has the ideas and vocabulary to express himself effectively. Jim tends to tire easily, but when prompted, contributes to group work. His reading is exceeding expectations and this is something that Jim is very proud of. He takes great pleasure out of reading and is proud of his accomplishments in this area.”

Physical Education - Body Kinesthetic Intelligence

Jim says: “What can I say – I’m just not good at sports or building. I can act though.”

The Teachers Say: “Jim has great skill in the performing arts, including drama and music. In PE, Jim struggles with coordination and balance, and his fine motor skills in drawing and printing are also a challenge for him.”

Art - Visual Spatial Intelligence

Jim says: “I like art, and like looking at maps, photographs, and videos. My strength is shading, my challenge is drawing. I am meeting expectations.”
The Teachers Say: “Although this is not Jim’s favorite subject, he has developed a new found interest in it. Jim did a great job of creating props for the plays that his group performed and took pride in many of the miniature 3D models for our Steveston maps. Jim learns well through visuals, and can represent concepts symbolically. ”

Band - Musical Rhythmic Intelligence

Jim says: “I play in two bands, and sing in the Boys Choir. I have just started composing – this is definitely my strength, and my future.”

The Teachers Say: “Jim is an exceptionally talented musician, and excels at expressing himself musically both vocally and instrumentally. He has rhythm and can move to the music although he is often a little shy in doing so. His Steveston group created and performed a fantastic chant about Steveston, and added sound effects and acting roles.”

Logical-Mathematical:

Jim says: “Math is not really my favorite – it’s hard for me to remember all the steps. I like geometry though. I think I am meeting expectations.”
The Teachers Say: “Jim has fully met the expectations for numeracy at his grade level. He understands the concepts in numeracy, and can problem solve. At times, Jim struggles with computation, as he forgets steps in processes such as long division or solving an algebraic equation. He often uses mental math to arrive at a correct answer quickly and can use more than one strategy when problem solving..”

Jim is a deep thinker and enriches the learning of his classmates. He needs to continue to work on managing his concentration, energy, and materials.
