Organic Field Day set in Lamberton

LAMBERTON, Minn. -- An Organic Field Day is planned June 28 at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center in Lamberton. The event begins at 8:30 a.m.

Several University of Minnesota staffers will conduct field tours to examine weed management strategies, organic soybean planting dates and variety trials.

Jerry DeWitt, acting director of the Leopold Center in Iowa, will talk about making a connection between researchers and farmers.

"Our featured speakers are nationally known experts who are keenly aware of the impacts of organic agriculture on family farming, community vitality and the health and well-being of individuals,'' said Jim Riddle, organic outreach coordinator at the University of Minnesota.

Organic livestock focus of international event

ST. PAUL -- The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements will hold its first-ever international conference on organic livestock Aug. 23-25 on the University of Minnesota's St. Paul campus.

The conference begins Aug. 23 with tours of organic livestock farms in the Twin Cities area.

Opening remarks will be delivered by Commissioner of Agriculture Gene Hugoson and U of M Dean Bev Durgan. The opening keynote address will be delivered by Fred Kirschenmann of Iowa State University's Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture.
