Activity 1.3 – Social Implications of the use of Automation and Robotics

Purpose

What would you do first, if you were hired to convert a factory that still used hand held drills and saws to produce products into a state-of-the-art, automated factory? There are so many things to consider. Many of the employees will have to be retrained or let go because they would have no idea about how to read video screens much less program robots. Many have never played a video game or even checked email. You know that robots are capable of doing many things; trying to convince the employees that using robots is a good move is going to be a big challenge.

Your boss said to remember that when you make decisions that affect jobs and job security you have to keep in mind what is best for society as a whole. Often what is good for the short term must be sacrificed for what will ultimately be good for the long term and vice versa. The use of robots creates new jobs that require more skill.
