Regulations for the Acceptable Use of College IT Facilities

1.  College IT facilities may only be used for College purposes unless otherwise authorised

2.  Users must abide by all the terms and conditions attached to licensed software. In particular, use for other than educational purposes is forbidden without the expressed permission of the licensor.

3.  Users must not load any additional software onto the IT systems without the prior approval of the Technical Support Team Leader. It is the responsibility of the Technical Support Team Leader to ensure that the appropriate licences are obtained for all software. All attached terms and conditions of use must be adhered to.

4.  Wilful damage or interference adversely affecting the performance of the College’s IT facilities is strictly forbidden. This includes the following actions:

·  Attempts to interfere with equipment and cabling

·  Introduction of Viruses.

·  Use of consumables such as printer paper for other than the intended use.

5.  Users must not publish, transmit or display of material likely to cause offence, such as strong language, abuse, obscene or racist text and graphics.

6.  All users of the College’s IT facilities must comply with the relevant parts of UK law, including:

·  The Data Protection Act

·  The Copyright Misuse Act

Under this Act unauthorised access or modification of computer systems became criminal offences. There are three types of offences under this Act:

1.  Unauthorised access to systems or data held on a computer, with a penalty of up to 6 months’ imprisonment and a £2,000 fine.

2.  Unauthorised access with intent to commit further offences (theft, fraud etc), with a penalty of up to 5 years’ imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

3.  Unauthorised modification of computer systems or data (by introducing viruses etc), with a penalty of up to 5 years’ imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

·  The Copyright, Designs and Patent Act

The unauthorised copying of software is illegal. Anyone infringing copyright may be liable to a personal fine of up to £2,000 and up to 6 months’ imprisonment.

7.  All user must adhere to the following college policies, regulations and guidelines

·  College Information Security Policy

·  College Data Protection Policy

·  Email and Internet Policy

·  Staff Guidelines for Data Protection

·  Student Guidelines for Data Protection

8.  Any infringement of these regulations may constitute a disciplinary offence. Where breech of the UK law is suspected the infringement may be reported to the Police.
