Brief Biosketch

Dr. Candler is an Associate Professor of Medicine and serves as the Associate Dean for Medical Education. Dr. Chris Candler received an M.D. from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. During his twelve years in medical education he has served in a variety of administrative and leadership roles.

Dr. Candler has received over one million dollars of funding from national granting agencies for work on medical education. His projects have been featured in Harvard Medical International and the journal Science. He is an alumnus of the Harvard Macy Program for Physician Educators Class of 2001 and received the Oklahoma State Regents Award for Instructional Technology Excellence.

Dr. Candler is the Editor and Co-Founder of MedEdPORTAL, a peer-reviewed publication developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Dr. Chris Candler currently serves as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and the Editor-in-Chief of the Association of American Medical College’s MedEdPORTAL publication. During his fourteen years in medical education he has served in a variety of administrative and leadership roles and has been an active member of the medical education community. In his role as Editor-in-Chief of MedEdPORTAL, Dr. Candler has worked with authors, reviewers, and officials from many medical schools to advance the ongoing conversation regarding the definition and scope of educational scholarship in the medical education community.

Dr. Candler has authored over forty medical education publications in books and refereed journals, including eight Academic Medicine manuscripts. These articles address a variety of timely medical education issues such as attitudes towards educational scholarship, curriculum development, and the role of instructional technology in medical education. In addition, Dr. Candler recently organized and chaired a 2006 international educational technology colloquium that brought together luminaries from the medical education community to develop a consensus document regarding the effective use of educational technology in medical education.

Dr. Candler has received over one million dollars of competitive grant funding to enhance medical education. His medical education projects have been featured in Harvard Medical International and the international journal Science.

Dr. Candler is currently completing the requirements for a Doctorate in Education through the University of Arkansas. His dissertation title is “Do Non-Traditional Educational Scholarship Publications Contribute to Faculty Advancement at LCME Accredited Medical Schools?” This study will add to the generalized knowledge regarding the types of scholarly works that contribute to faculty advancement at United States and Canadian medical schools.

Dr. Candler is frequently invited to speak at medical schools and medical education conferences. He has delivered over ninety national and international presentations and has served as a consultant for numerous medical schools and other national organizations such as the National Library of Medicine. He has been invited to present his perspective regarding educational technology and MedEdPORTAL at several medical schools including Harvard Medical School and the Stanford University School of Medicine. In addition, he has served as an associate editor or reviewer for twelve refereed medical education journals including Academic Medicine, Medical Education, Medical Teacher, and Teaching and Learning in Medicine.

In 2007 Dr. Candler served as a member of a five-person team assigned to visit medical schools anticipating a class size increase. This project involved an in-depth analysis of the challenges and opportunities associated with medical school class expansion. It resulted in the publication of a book that was subsequently disseminated by the AAMC to all medical school deans.

In 2006 Dr. Candler served as the Co-Chair of an international Working Group on Healthcare Education Competencies. In this role he led an expert panel that initiated a competency framework standard designed to support the development of specific healthcare competencies.

Dr. Candler is an alumnus of the Harvard Macy Program for Physician Educators Class of 2001 and has been honored with the State of Oklahoma Regents Award for Instructional Technology Excellence.
