AP English 11 Summer Assignment 2017

It is your task to read one of the following books:

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

During the second week of school, you will be asked to write a timed, in-class essay about your selected book. As you read, you should take notes on/annotate the book. If you choose to take notes outside of the book, they should contain references to specific page numbers; you will be allowed to use your handwritten notes and annotated book during the in-class essay. This essay MUST contain direct references to evidence from the book with cited page numbers. Any notes you use (including an annotated book) must be turned in with your essay.

The in-class essay will consist of your choice of five writing prompts. These prompts deal with the following topics that you may want to pay attention to as you read and take notes/annotate:

1. Title

2. Character

3. Pathos vs. Logos (loosely, emotion vs. logic)

4. Style (figurative lang., diction, syntax, etc.)

5. Theme

Of course, all of this work is to be done independently. You are to

work alone and turn in your own original work.
