AG Barn Rules and Regulations

The rules and regulations outlined below exist for the health and safety of all projects and FFA members and visitors who are on the Dickinson AG Barn property.

1. All parents/guardians of students raising projects at the Dickinson FFA Ag Barn are encouraged to join the Booster Club. Annual dues and forms must be completed and turned into the Booster Club.

2. NO PASS, NO PLAY – Any student that is declared ineligible will not be able to show nor have a substitute exhibitor show his/her animal in any show or event, or participate in any FFA Activities.

3. Students must pay all Fees associated with their animal project(s).

4. Students showing animals for the Galveston County Livestock Show will get priority for pens. If there is a shortage of pens, students with animals for other shows may be asked to remove their animals.

5. Students must obtain permission from the Dickinson Ag Teachers before bringing an animal to the Dickinson AG Barn.

6. Students may have NO MORE than 3 animal projects AT ONE TIME. A heifer that calves is still considered 1 project. A family may have no more than 6 animal projects at one time in the barn.

7. All animal projects in the barn must be entered in a Dickinson FFA approved show. Animals not being shown through the Dickinson FFA will not be allowed in the barn.

8. All animals kept at the barn, must be properly cared for daily. Animals should be fed daily, provided clean drinking water daily, medical care provided when necessary, or the animal will be subject to removal. Preventative medications, if deemed necessary, can be administered by either of the Ag Teachers.

9. All pens will be maintained structurally and cleaned daily. If you see trash or debris anywhere in the barn, please pick it up.

10. The Dickinson FFA Ag Barn hours will be from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., seven (7) days a week. Presence on the Ag Farm/Barn premises before or after these hours is in defiance of this contract, unless there is a medical emergency with a project and notification has been made to the Ag Teachers. It is recommended that students maintain their project(s) directly following school hours to avoid having to be at the barn after hours.

11. Animal pens must be kept at the standard pen size, once pens are constructed; they may not be altered or removed until deemed appropriate by the Ag Teacher.

12. All students and/or parents will participate in all scheduled workdays. If there is an unavoidable reason as to why the student or parent cannot make the workday, notification must be made 2 days prior to the work day. The attendance roster will close 30 minutes after the start of the workday.

13. No person is allowed to enter the pen of another student, unless there is an emergency affecting the safety and well-being of the animal or that person has permission from the owner to enter the pen. Anyone entering another student’s pen for emergency purposes shall immediately notify the Ag Teachers.

14. For the safety and security of all students and their projects, contact information for the student and his/her parents must be on file with the Ag Teachers.

15. Any waste left in wheelbarrows, must be emptied. This is for the health of all animals in the barn.

16. NO electrical or battery operated devices or appliances are permitted in any project pen, or any place within the barn without prior approval from the Ag Teachers. The only exception is electric fans and heat lamps. Heat lamps should be kept at a safe distance from the animal and only used if temperatures are expected to drop below 45*F. Fans and heat lamps should not be on if the animal is not in the pen.

17. The wash rack and grooming area must be maintained and kept clean at all times. No clipping in the wash rack. All clippings must be removed after grooming your animal.

18. No person is allowed on the Dickinson AG Barn premises without prior approval from the Ag Teacher, except FFA Students (with projects) and their respective families who are signed on this contract. If you would like to bring a guest onto the Ag Barn premises, please notify the Ag Teachers for proper approval beforehand.

19. If you need to have an alternate person feed or care for your project, please discuss the situation with the Ag Teachers. All parents and students need to go through Ethel Carter to gain access to the barn by acquiring a Swipe Card and/or gate key.

20. Any destruction or vandalism to another person’s project or pen, or to any property on the Ag Barn/Farm, will result in immediate termination of this contract, and removal of project(s) from the Dickinson FFA Ag Barn.

21. Absolutely NO Tobacco Products, No Drugs, No Alcohol, No Firearms and NO Fireworks are allowed on the property. Failure to comply will result in immediate termination of this contract and removal of the project(s). Any unlawful activity will be reported to authorities.

22. If your animal must be removed for any reason (i.e. vet visit), you are responsible for notifying the Ag Teachers for safety and security.

23. Animals must remain inside of the Agriculture Facility at all times. No one should walk his/her animal(s) outside the main gate at any time unless of an emergency, and at that time, the Agriculture Teachers need to be contacted.

24. Animals should not be walked in the parking lot at any time except to get to and from the pastures, and in this instance; the back of the barn is preferred. While walking your animal you are responsible for cleaning up after the animal at all times.

25. Absolutely NO outside animals (i.e. dogs, cats, other livestock, etc.) which are not a registered FFA project are permitted at any time at the Ag Barn.

26. Graduating seniors who have not paid all outstanding balances will be placed on the DHS Not-Clear List and will not be allowed to participate in graduation activities or receive his/her diploma until these balances have been paid in full.

27. Absolutely NO PARKING inside the barn, in fire lanes, and in front of Barn roll up doors unless you are loading/unloading animals and/or feed and tack. No person is permitted to park in handicap parking spots unless are permitted to do so by the state of Texas whether by hanging placard or license plate. If anyone is in violation of this rule, the vehicle is subject to being towed at the owner’s expense.

28. After the animal project’s designated show is complete all animals must be removed within seven (7) days, unless the Ag Teachers have given prior permission. Animals and pens must be continued to be properly cared for until they are removed. After removal of animals, all pens must be cleaned within seven (7) days, including all personal belongings and trash from clean-up.

29. Any animal or personal item(s) not removed from the AG Barn in the allotted time will become property of the AG Department, unless otherwise notified.

30. All animal projects, except breeding beef heifers, will be taken directly to slaughter after Galveston County Fair & Rodeo, unless other arrangements are made.

31. A $100 fine will be assessed to the student if they do not fulfill the obligation of cleaning their animal pen(s), locker(s), and other storage areas used by the student once their animal project is complete. A student will be considered not in good standing with the FFA organization until this fine is paid in full.

32. If you are the last person leaving the barn it is required to shut all exterior doors and set the alarm. If the alarm is not set and/or doors are left open overnight, the surveillance video will be reviewed and the last person who left the barn will be penalized.

33. Most importantly, all students, parents, and guests will treat each other and the Ag Teachers with respect and proper courtesy. Anyone found to be using foul language or being disrespectful will be penalized. The Ag Barn is a school facility and we strive to keep a family environment.

Dickinson AG Barn Fees

Students are responsible for paying all Fees either up-front or on the payment plan described below. Fees are on a per pen, per year basis and are non-refundable.

· Steer and Heifer Projects are $100 per pen, per year

· Lamb, Goat, and Swine Projects are $60 per pen, per year

If a payment plan is preferred, the following payment schedule will be imposed. This payment plan will be scheduled with the Ag Teachers.

50% of the pen payment is due upon project entry into the barn.

25% of the remaining pen payment is due 30 days after project entry into the barn.

The remaining 25% of the pen payment is due 60 days after project entry into the barn.

Pen Tagging:

A pen tagging system is in place and is enforced by the Ag Teachers. Flagging tape will be placed on the gate of any pen that is deemed necessary to be cleaned. Students will have 24 hours to clean the pen(s) or will receive a barn write-up unless otherwise notified. Ag Teachers will work to notify the students whose pen(s) have been tagged. The Ag Teachers will have record of all pens that have been tagged. Flagging tape should not be removed until the pen has been cleaned and checked by the Ag Teachers. If a student’s pen(s) have been tagged 5 times throughout the school year they will receive a barn write up and will receive an additional barn write-up each time their pen(s) is tagged thereafter.

Record Books:

Students who raise animals and who are also in an agriculture course are encouraged to keep a record book. Record books keep track of an animal project and the expenditures associated with that project. All record books will be turned in after Galveston County Fair and Rodeo and will be evaluated by the Ag Teachers. Students will also have the opportunity to enter their record books into local and area competitions. Instruction on record books will be given in the agriculture course. The student will have a set class time to work on these record books on a regular basis.

Animal Transportation:

The Ag Teachers are able to transport animals if they are available to do so. Transportation should be arranged 1 week in advance to the event or appointment. The Ag Teachers are not available for transporting animals during school hours. Transportation will be provided to and from the following shows: Galveston County Fair, Houston Livestock Show, San Antonio Stock Show, and the Fort Worth Stock Show. It is encouraged that if traveling to the Veterinarian or a Show/Clinic that multiple students arrange to travel together.

Consequences for Violating Dickinson ISD AG Barn Rules and Regulations:

The Ag Teachers will notify students and/or parents/guardians of any problems or violations noted. Failure to remedy the situation within 1 day will result in termination of this contract and removal of the project(s) immediately.

If a student or any persons signed on that student’s contract violate any of the Dickinson ISD AG Barn rules or regulations, the following procedures will be applied:

1. First offense:

· A written warning will be given to the violating student and/or family member and the parent will be contacted.

2. Second offense:

· Meeting with Student, Ag Teachers, and a School Administrator.

3. Third Offense:

· Meeting with Student, Parent(s), Ag Teachers, and a school administrator.

4. Fourth Offense:

· This contract will be terminated and the student’s project(s) will be removed. The Ag Teachers will serve any notifications of complaints or terminations thereof. This will also result in a permanent ban from raising animals in the Dickinson AG Barn.

The offending student will be given a copy of the barn write-up. A copy of the write-up will be kept on file with the Ag Teachers as well as the CTE Director, Ms. Patricia Lankford.

AG Barn Rules and Regulations

All students and parents/guardians must sign this contract and understand that the rules will be enforced prior to having a pen assigned at the Dickinson AG Barn. All rules, regulations and laws set forth by the Dickinson ISD Handbook and Texas State Law must be followed as the AG Barn is property of Dickinson ISD and the State of Texas.

IF AT ANY TIME THE AG TEACHERS DETERMINE THAT THESE RULES ARE NOT BEING FOLLOWED YOUR ANIMAL MAY BECOME PROPERTY OF THE AG DEPARTMENT AND REMOVED.

Your signature indicates that you understand that this AG Barn is made available through the Dickinson FFA and Dickinson ISD.

The Ag Teachers have complete control over who is or is not allowed on the property and all rules that apply as outlined in this contract.

I agree to conduct myself in a professional manner at all times in the AG Barn at all events where I am representing the FFA.

Parent/Legal Guardian:

I agree to abide by the rules and criteria set forth in the Dickinson AG Barn Rules that I have received, read, understood, and signed. I agree to pay all relevant fees associated with the expense and upkeep of my child’s animal project(s). I agree to indemnify Dickinson ISD, Dickinson ISD employees, and volunteers of liability for any injury that my child, any allowable family member, or I may sustain by participating in activities at the Dickinson AG Barn, and I agree to monitor my child for compliance with the above stated rules.
