TUTORING RESOURCES

Every Children’s Social Worker and caregiver desires academic success for the children in their care. Many children benefit from having their classroom experiences enhanced by participating in tutoring services.
Information about education resources is available on LAKids and the public DCFS homepage under the Health and Education icon.
The community has a wide range of tutoring resources that are free or available for a nominal cost.
-  Most schools have after school tutoring programs. Call the school and/or the school district directly to inquire about tutoring available at the school. If you need the school phone numbers, a link to the local school district is available through LAKids. Go to the Health and Education icon. All school districts are linked under Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE). For students attending Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) schools, a direct link to the district is provided as well.
-  Many local libraries have literacy development classes, including one-on-one tutoring.
-  Many community colleges and universities have students available to provide tutoring resources. Contact the Service Learning Centers at the universities for assistance.
-  Other resources are the Literacy Network of Greater Los Angeles directory (which includes the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara and Ventura),website address www.literacynetwork.org or Los Angeles County Organizations, website address http://sccac.lacoe.edu/reads/los angeles/orgs.html or use the LAKids link to connect.
A copy of the Literacy Network of Greater Los Angeles directory has been provided to each Regional office to assist Children’s Social Workers in finding resource options for tutoring.

Children’s Social workers are encouraged to consider the above alternatives and to assess if the available resources sufficiently meet the child’s educational needs. If these or other community based services cannot meet the child’s special educational needs, there are several, fee-based learning institutions in the community. Each Regional office has a limited amount of funding for tutoring and other special and emergency needs via the Special Payment system. The funding is subject to approval of the Supervising Children’s Social Worker and the Office management.

Children’s access to educational services is a key element in breaking the cycle of abuse and achieving personal success. If you have additional education resources to share, please contact the Education Initiative team at (213) 351-0159.
