The aim of this directory is to help clubs and organisations get in touch with coaches in the area.
If you cannot find what you need or if you are a coach and would like to be included please contact the Sports Development Unit (details on the last page).
Directories giving details of sports clubs/organisations and venues where sport can be played in West Dorset are also available from the Sports Development Unit. Please contact us if you would like to receive a copy, or if would like to add your club/organisation or venue to be included in the next edition.
Every effort has been made to ensure that the information in this guide is correct and up to date. West Dorset District Council cannot be held responsible for inaccuracy or variation to the information given. All organisations listed are contacted annually to check that the details are still correct, the entry is then either amended or deleted as appropriate. If the coach does not reply we remove their details from the list.

Sports Development Unit Services at West Dorset District Council
The objectives of the Sports Development Unit (SDU) are based on key issues identified from the research findings by Leisure Futures in 1999 as part of the preparation of the new Sports Strategy “The Sporting Challenge”. If you would like to receive a summary of this document please let us know. The following information outlines the services that the Sports Development Unit provides; please contact the Unit if you cannot find what you are looking for here or if you would like more information (contact details on the last page).
Coaching and club development
Advice on club development is available as well as information on national and local schemes to help your club start or grow. A list of local courses and workshops for leaders and coaches is held by the Sports Development Unit and is available to individuals and clubs.
The databases are used to keep sports clubs, organisations, and venues for sport and coaches informed and they also help the public find out about the range of sports opportunities in the area.
Grants and funding
The District Council’s Leisure Development Fund grant scheme and Small Grants for Sport scheme provides financial assistance to voluntary/not for profit making organisations, schools and Town/Parish Councils for capital projects and events.
Officers from the Leisure and Tourism Division are able to provide advice on possible sources of partnership funding for projects and events.
Action Van
A range of equipment is available to hire to groups. New and developing clubs may be able to benefit from free use of equipment.
The Action Van provides a range of activities to suit the needs of groups and organisations. Action Van staff will set up, organise and run the activities. There is a wide range of activities on offer including fitness, athletics, ball sports and play.
Leisure centres
In addition to the Sports Development Unit the division operates two leisure centres; Thomas Hardye in Dorchester and Gryphon Leisure in Sherborne. It also supports Bridport and West Dorset Sports Trust which manages Bridport Leisure Centre and has supported the lottery funded facilities; St Osmund's Community Sports Centre in Dorchester and Budmouth Community Sports Centre in Chickerell.
Health promotion
The West Dorset’s Exercise Referral Scheme aims to help people take a bit more exercise to improve their health. The leisure centres provide advice and exercise programmes to suit the needs and preferences of patients who have been referred onto the scheme. The scheme is a joint venture between West Dorset District Council’s Leisure and Tourism Division, the five leisure centres and South West Dorset Primary Care Trust.
