Book Discussion Group

The A+ Active Adults Book Discussion Group meets the first Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the A+ room at The Community House. This is a small and friendly group that welcomes newcomers and reads some great selections! Please come by and join us for some interesting discussion.

September 14, 2015 – The Bully Pulpit by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and the Golden Age of Journalism.

October 5, 2015 – Bill O’Reilly’s Legends and Lies by William Fisher. The authors explore the true stories behind the Wild West's most legendary characters, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Black Bart, Billy the Kid and Jesse James.

November 2, 2015 – Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. Let’s compare this classic to the recent movie and today’s current development of relationships.

December 7, 2015 – The Liberated Bride by Abraham Yehoshua. As Yohanan Rivlin, a professor at Haifa University, embarks on research into recent Algerian history with the help of a student, a young Araba bride from a Galilee village, he becomes obsessed with his son’s failed marriage.

Exercise Classes

Ageless Yoga Join this popular class, designed for those with limited mobility. Modified classic yoga exercises with easy standing poses and low impact work in a chair allow students the chance to improve strength and flexibility in an approachable and fun way.

Fridays, 10:30 – 11:30am, September 11 – October 16. Members $48; Guests $58.

October 23 – December 18. Members $56; Guests $66

Sit and Get Fit Our instructor Gail will lead the class as we work on increasing range of motion, circulation, flexibility, balance and strength with easy to follow moves. We sometimes use light weights or toning bands to improve strength. Mondays and Wednesdays 11:45 –12:45pm. Ongoing; purchase a 10-class punch card for $60 (Members) $75 (Guests).

Prime Time This is an easy-to-follow class where you will enjoy a low-impact workout designed to improve your cardiovascular fitness, strength, balance and flexibility. Sessions are on-going so you may register at any time during the class. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 8:45-9:45 am. Ongoing; purchase a 10-class punch card for $55 (Members) $75 (Guests).

Walking Track

Don’t forget as members of the Active Adult program you have FREE use of The Community House walking track on the upper level of the Field House (whenever the building is open, usually 8 am. to 7 pm.). Rubber soled shoes are required. Non-members can use the walking track for a small fee. All track users must check in at the front desk.

Indian Prairie Computer Club

Meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 9:30 am. This group offers periodic informational presentations by guest speakers or club members, as well as general question and answer sessions.

Video Storytelling

Come share memories or fun stories and we will make a video that you can easily share!

Here is a fun and easy way to capture and share your experiences, stories or memories via photos and video.All you have to do is show up and tell a story just like you were on the phone with a friend or in your own home with family! Let us take your experiences or special memories you would like to share while they are fresh and turn them into a permanent keepsake for you and those who matter most to you.

Sabrina Nizzi uses technology to capture stories in your own voice then edits them into a fun video you can share with those who would love to have a keepsake of your memory or experience. She is trained in working with people from all walks of life, listening to their experiences and editing memories into fun videos for your family and friends to enjoy and share. Bridge Lessons

Lessons for new or Intermediate/advanced bridge players interested in learning the latest “mainstream” bidding system: Two-Over-One. Slightly different than the Standard American System most of us know, it makes bidding games and slams much easier. Each week will include bidding and playing four hands in a relaxed atmosphere with other students.

Mondays from 9 – 11 at The Community House, starting Monday, September 21--October 26. Cost $79, plus $17 for textbook, payable to instructor, Bob Meixner.

“Senior Jam Session”

Want to play the musical instrument you haven’t picked up in ages? Join us at The Community House once a month, at no cost, to make music with others who enjoy playing. We’ll meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month, September 17, October 15, November 19 and December 17 from 2 – 4pm.
All instruments, including voice, are welcome! Music will be from the 1930 – 1950 era, “The Great American Songbook”. If you are of retirement age, can read lead sheets then bring your instrument and come play with us. AARP Driver Safety Program

Monday and Tuesday, September 28 and 29, 2015 Tuesday and Wednesday, November 17 and 18, 2015 from 11:30 am – 3:30 pm at The Community House. Fee: $15.00 for AARP members (you will need your AARP number) and $20 for nonmembers. Payment is due the first day of class (Please make check payable to AARP.)

These classes are offered at The Community House for drivers who are over the age of 50 and wish to update their driving skills. It is a classroom-only session. Many insurance companies offer a discount to drivers who have taken this program. Pre-registration is required, and you must attend both days. Call the Front Desk to Register. 630-323-7500 ext. 0.

Retired Men’s Roundtable

The roundtable is a group of retired business and professional men from Hinsdale and the surrounding communities. They meet monthly on the 4th Wednesday, starting at 9:30 a.m. for coffee and donuts and to hear a stimulating speaker on a subject of current or local interest. Fee: $3.00 at the door.

Mr. Johnson has over thirty years of experience in the corporate world. Throughout his career, he has been a key member of the Executive Management Team at multiple corporations in addition to having extensive depth in the non-profit industry.

The Wonderful World of Watercolors

Learn how to paint with watercolors by following an easy, step-by-step method requiring no special skills, experience or abilities. This course will dispel many myths you have about the difficulty of using watercolors. Discover how to fix mistakes and create paintings that will delight you! You will leave each session with a completed painting. Fee includes painting supplies. Thursdays, 10:00am – noon, Session 1—September 10 through October 1, Session 2 – October 8 – October 29, Members $90; Guests $105 per session.

Oil Painting Classes

This course is for students seeking to explore representational painting. In this class you will learn how to paint from life using the same medium as the old masters-Caravaggio, Velasquez, Manet, Monet and many more. You will be asked to open your eyes to the color and life around you and you will be taught how to paint what you see! We will be working from a still-life as students will have the opportunity to create 2 paintings in a session with a group critique at the end. Prior painting experience is not required. October 8, 2015 / Big Eyes / Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz (PG-13) / The true story of painter Margaret Keane's life in obscurity while her husband took full credit for her body of work. Keane’s unique paintings of small children with strikingly expressive, saucer-like eyes became increasingly popular and with the money rolling in, Margaret initially agrees to go along with the ruse. But the closer she got to her new husband the more she begins to realized that he was merely a smooth-talking scam artist. Later, Margaret leaves the increasingly abusive Walter, and only then does she gain the confidence to reclaim the works that have been credited to her husband.

Meanwhile, new guests Guy and Lavinia find themselves in a predicament after arriving at the hotel to find there is only one vacancy.
