Holiday Crime Prevention Tips

Direct from an email from 5th Division LMPD District Resource Officer Dan English: I recently had a chance to speak with one of the burglars we caught breaking into houses on Beat 2. He would watch for people leaving their house in the morning. Knock on the front door, then go around back and throw a rock through the window. He knew that if he happened to set off a security system he had between 10-20 minutes before police could make it there. I would advise everyone to try to make your home appear to be occupied at all times. Leave a light, radio, or TV on while you’re away. Also, write down all the serial numbers of your computer, ipad, Flat screen TV, etc. I’d also recommend backing up all your files, pictures, and videos from your computers on a separate external drive.

New Water Fountains

This past spring the D9 office ordered three new outdoor bottle filling stations with one basin and one dog bowl. These new filling stations will allow folks to refill their reusable water bottles with greater ease. Two water fountains were installed this fall at the Keats/Frankfort public parking lot, and on Reservoir Avenue near the steps that lead to the walking path. The third fountain will be installed soon at Brownsboro/Story in the Karen Lynch Park. We hope you and your furry friends enjoy these new stations and don’t forget to bring your re-usable water bottle with you!

Upcoming Junk Pick Up and River Metals Incentives

The 9th District Urban Services District (USD) will have junk collection set-out on a select weekend in December or January, depending on your address. You may begin setting out your junk Friday afternoon prior to your junk pick-up week and must have it all out by Monday at 6:00 AM. For your specific junk set-out weekend please visit http://mapit.louisvilleky.gov/ and enter your address OR call the office at 574-1109. For collection guidelines please visit www.louisvilleky.gov/solidwaste.

From December 14-21, to correspond with Junk Pick Up dates, River Metals Recycling (RMR) is inviting 9th District Residents to receive higher rates for recycling scrap metal: an additional $10 per ton for ferrous scrap (appliances, sheet metal, cars) and $0.05 per pound extra for nonferrous items (cans, copper, aluminum, stainless steel). To participate, print the coupon attached to this email andbring your scrap metal to River Metals at 2045 River Road between December 14-21. Thanks to River Metals for offering this incentive and for its support of the Green Triangle. Go green with RMR and get your green! Keep metal out of the landfill by taking it to River Metals to be recycled instead of setting it out for Junk Pick Up. Find your Junk Pick Up dates on the Louisville website.

End of Year Giving Opportunity

The Williams-Nichols Archive for LGBT Studies has embarked on an exciting new initiative, and is inviting you to participate. Since David Williams founded the archives in 1982, it has grown to rival larger collections in large US cities. Louisville is one of only a handful of mid-size American cities whose LGBT history can be documented thoroughly and completely. In March2012 the University Libraries embarked on a fundraising campaign to establish an endowment for the collection. The David Williams Endowment for LGBT Initiatives will be used primarily to fund development of a circulating LGBT book collection for student use, subscribe to LGBT themed databases, provide for a permanent collection exhibit within the University’s Ekstrom Library, and preserve the collection for future generations. Long-term plans include a lecture series, forums, and even a film festival. As you plan your year-end giving, please consider donating to the David Williams Endowment for LGBT Initiatives. Find a donation form here or visit www.ChartingOurCourse.org for more information.

Small Business Loan to 9th District Business

The Louisville Metropolitan Business Development Corporation approved a $25,000 loan to Joy Owens and Cindy Ealy, for a new Sam’s Hot Dog Stand located at 1984 Brownsboro Road. The loan will allow the owners to open a new hot dog franchise, which specializes in chili dogs, and is popular in its other 45 locations in Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Ohio. So let’s welcome them to the 9th District by eating there when they open! For more information about the city’s small-business loan program, visit http://www.louisvilleky.gov/economicdevelopment/METCO.htm
