English 102 Research Paper Assignment

You will choose one of the topics off the supplied list to write your research paper. We have already put together a mini annotated bibliography, so your best bet would be to continue using that topic as you will be able to go back and use those sources from that assignment. Use the Basha Library or the Chandler Gilbert CC Library to access scholarly articles for your research.

Requirements:

·  4-6 pages, typed in MLA format

·  integrate information from 8 or more research sources (6 must be scholarly articles)

·  integrate at least 8 sources (directly quoted or paraphrased), but no more than 1 direct quote per page, and properly cite the sources.

·  No more than 1 long quote (of over 40 words) in entire paper.

·  properly formatted Works Cited.

Below is an outline to use to help you organize your essay and synthesize your resources. Please note that each section does not necessarily correspond to one paragraph. Each aspect of each section should be addressed, and might need to be addressed in separate paragraphs. Please review the rubric for this assignment for additional grading categories. Outline (sections, NOT paragraphs)

I. Introduction

A.  Attention-grabbing hook (question, scene, interesting fact or quote, setting a scene, setting up problem & solution.)

B.  Introduce issue/topic

C.  Causes/effects of the issue/topic

D.  THESIS STATEMENT - MAIN IDEA OF THE ENTIRE REST OF PAPER- STATING THE PROPOSED SOLUTION TO THE TOPIC/ISSUE.

II. Body

A.  Propose a solution that addresses the topic/issue.

1.  Discuss why this solution is an IDEAL solution. Consider such factors as cost, efficiency (how easily implemented), the reasons why the solution would appeal to a specific group of people, incentives for adopting this solution, etc. Provide evidence for each reason from your research

2.  How does this solution help the problem or a certain aspect of the problem? Utilize your researched sources to provide specific support.

3. Address Opposition: What might people argue against the solution? What might others

propose as solutions? Concede, counter, rebut, and/or refute any possible opposition to your solution. Address Opposition: What might people argue against this action? What have others done to take action? Concede, counter, rebut, and/or refute any possible opposition to your planned action.
