You are advised to spend 40 minutes writing an essay on your chosen topic.

Write clearly and coherently about at least TWO short written texts you have studied in class.

You may write about the following text types:

• short stories

• poetry

• print media

• short hyperfiction.

The texts you write about could be the same text type (eg two poems) or different text types (eg a poem and a short story), and may have the same or different authors.

Choose ONE of the six topics listed below.

At the beginning of your answer on page 3:

• circle the text type(s)

• write the topic number

• write the titles of the texts

• name the author(s).

Write at least 300 words for your answer.

Make sure you address ALL parts of the topic.

Support your discussion with specific evidence from at least TWO texts.

TOPICS (choose ONE)

1. For EACH of your studied texts, analyse how language features made at least TWO of the author’s descriptions more vivid for you.

Note: “Descriptions” could include descriptions of people, places, ideas; “vivid” could mean easy to imagine, lifelike, powerful, etc.

2. For EACH of your studied texts, analyse how symbolism was used to develop a main theme.

3. For EACH of your studied texts, analyse how actions OR dialogue helped you to understand ONE main character / individual.

4. For EACH of your studied texts, analyse TWO ways the author made the text appealing to a specific audience.

Note: You should clearly identify who the specific audience for each text is. “Appealing” can be interpreted as “attractive” and / or “persuasive”.

5. For EACH of your studied texts, analyse how TWO methods used by the author affected your opinion of an important issue or idea.

6. For EACH of your studied texts, analyse how contrast helped the author develop an important idea.

Note: “Contrast” could include contrast between characters or settings; or contrast between different sections / parts in terms of style, mood, tone, pace, etc.
