8th Grade Glimpse
November 2 – 6, 2015
Vocal Music: The Fall Choral Concert will be held on Tuesday, November 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the High School (east) gym. Students should report to the gym by 6:45 p.m. 6th Grade Vocal students will report to the stage, and 7th and 8th graders will report to their labeled seats on the bleachers for roll call. Punctuality is part of each student’s grade. All students should plan on staying for the entire concert. Students should wear their blue Husker Music Shirt, black pants/skirts, and black shoes. Please let me know as soon as possible if your child is in need of clothing or shoes to wear to the concert. It is important that your child is in attendance, on time and well-behaved during the concert. Each student is an important member of the ensemble. Concerts are a celebration of the learning that has taken place in our classroom. Participation in performances is worth 200 points. If you have an emergency situation on the evening of the concert, please let me know by phone as soon as possible. Make-up assignments are allowed for excused absences. Counselors Corner: A big thank you to Parent Network for providing handouts to our students during Red Ribbon Week. These handouts were reminders for students to live a drug-free life. Thank you Peer Helpers also for your hard work this week. Classroom lessons for November will allow students the opportunity to learn about and explore potential careers. Also, a big shout out to the middle school student council for their participation in District STUCO here at LCC-1. It was a great experience for the students and we look forward to attending next year. 8th Grade Science: We will be finishing our unit on Motion and Forces. We will continue working with speed and velocity and distance-time graphs while also discussing and calculating acceleration and working with speed-time graphs. 8th Grade Social Studies: We will be finishing our study of the American Revolution and begin prepping for our first major test. We will then move on to how the United States formed and the Constitutional Convention. Discussion of the Founding Fathers and the early years of America as a new nation. Mr. Herron
Pre-Algebra: We will continue the unit on exponents and roots next week.There will be a quiz on Monday (B2 and B4) and Tuesday (G1) over integer exponents, simplifying expressions with exponents, and scientific notation. Students will be able to find square roots of perfect squares and estimate square roots to a given decimal place.
Algebra 1: We have completed the unit on inequalities. We will review for the test on Tuesday and take the test on Thursday. https://sites.google.com/site/huskersnikkel/. 8th Health and Physical Education: This week students learned about skin function and structure. Students also completed their second quarter fitness tests. Any students that missed a day of testing, need to make sure they arrange a time with their teacher to make up the test he or she missed. Students have started a new unit that they will continue with next week covering the World Series. Students will discuss the current Royals vs. Mets series and the history of the World Series. Power and Construction: This week the 8th graders finished plans for our upcoming project. Next week we hope to start on our shop project…dog houses. They will be looking for financial support. 8th Grade-Exploring Agriculture: This week we will continue discussing Unit 3: Animals in Our Society. Students will gain knowledge of the swine industry and how it influences our country’s economy. 8th Grade Band: Students have been working hard this week as we have started to prepare music for our first concert which will be held on December 14th at 7:00 pm. Please make sure your student has a nice pair of black shoes, black dress pants, and their blue music shirt. The music shirt order that was placed this year will be distributed to students in class the week of the concert. If you need help obtaining any of these items, please do not hesitate to contact me. Meyer Music will be holding a “step-up” night in our band room next Wednesday, November 4th for students who wish to trade up to a more quality instrument now that they have progressed. It will run from 5:30pm – 6:30pm. They will have representatives ready to talk to you about trade-in options and will also have the instruments here for the students to play.
8th Grade RISE: Students are working on putting together their presentations for their independent study projects and working on their projects in Scratch. In our Conflicts curriculum our Enduring Understanding is: Understanding the positive and negative sides of conflicts may help people make better choices. The guiding question with this lesson is: What is conflict resolution?

8th Grade Art: The students in this class will continue to draw the contour outlines for their people portraits. Once the outline is complete they will transfer the outline to their final paper and begin the shading portion of the project. This project will take about 4-5 weeks to complete.

8th Grade CA/Reading – Mrs. Lettau- This will be a spelling week and we will complete activities using the short ‘if’ sound. We will continue reading articles/stories to determine main idea with key details, using prefixes to change the meaning of words, and studying vocabulary. 8th FACS: Students are discussing eating disorders and the dangers of these disorders. Sewing projects are just around the corner. All students will need to pay $10 for their sewing projects. This money was due by October 30. Other than the project they will be required to make, students will be able to hand weave or crochet (No cost). If students want to do a tie blanket they must supply their own material (not required). If they choose to do a fringe pillow I can order one but it is an extra charge of $10 (not required). They may also create a t-shirt pillow out of their own shirt (not required) I will need to know by October 30 if they want me to order a fringe pillow. Anyone who does not turn in their $10 will be given an alternative assignment over sewing.
Food Science: They have been discussing matter in motion. They will be studying the effect of cooking time and conditions on pasta quality. Students not in the labs will be working on graphing data.
8th Grade Communication Arts: Spelling: Irregular plurals. Gold classes will receive a packet on Monday, due Wednesday, and test on Friday. Reading: We will continue our E.A. Poe unit with, A Pit and the Pendulum. Writing: We will begin our draft for the MSHSAA essay contest. Final essays are due November 18. Writing project: Gold 4 student’s quarterly project over a current A.R. book is due by December 11. A.R.: Students must meet 50% of their A.R. goal by Friday, November 13, and 100% of their A.R. goal by Thursday, December 17. Community News:
•Little League Wrestling sign ups: Tuesday, November 3 from 6pm-730pm @ the Community Building by the 4H Barn. $65 for first child, $50 for each additional wrestler, plus a $70 refundable singlet deposit. New wrestlers please bring birth certificate.
•Higginsville Parks and Rec. Dept. is sponsoring a Youth Basketball League for students in the 2nd-7th grades. The fee is $55.00 due with the registration form by November 6, 2015. $10 Late fee until 11/11. Discounts apply for multiple players within the same household. Fees includes the uniform (jersey/ shorts, medal). Tournement entry fees are not included in the registration fee and will be assessed to spectators for each day of play during the post season tournements.
