8th Grade Health - Addiction Project

Directions: The purpose of this project is to begin to understand the challenges a person with alcoholism faces when trying to recover from their dependence on alcohol. Choose something that you do every day, something that you enjoy and give it up for five days. DO NOT choose something that is detrimental to your health (such as skipping a meal), something that puts you at serious risk, danger or can get you in trouble (such as not texting or calling your parents when required) and/or something that interferes with your education (such as not doing homework or studying). Be sure to tell your family members and friends about this project so they know what you are doing and can support you in your challenge.

Below are some suggested and approved ideas. This is not an exhaustive list. If you are not sure, please ask me:

·  No Texting (Except for parents)

·  No Phone (No apps, not texts, no calling, etc.

·  No Video Games

·  No Netflix or other streaming programs.

·  No eating late night snacks (That is, if you think it is bad for your health.)

Now that you chose your activity, reflect upon your progress. Each day (5 total) you will have to do a journal entry in back of your health notebook. Below are the specific directions:

Day 1: Choose what you are giving up. Tell your family and friends so that they may support you. Mention who you told and how they did or did not support your efforts. Write a one page reflection describing your experience. You may set it up in paragraph form or bullet your ideas such as:

·  “9:34 PM – I really want to text right now. I usually am texting my friends at this time to talk about the day. I had to give my phone to my mom so I wouldn’t be tempted to grab it. This is really hard. I don’t know if I am going to make it 5 days.”

Regardless of your format, you must still use complete sentences and your entries must be legible.

Day 2-4: Write a one page reflection describing your experience. How is day 2 vs. day 1, day 3 vs. 2, etc. Is it getting easier or harder? Who is supporting you? Who is not supporting you? Does the support help? What strategies are you using to prevent you from giving in? Etc.

Day 5: Write a brief journal entry. (Do the same as you did Day 2-4, but only a few sentences.) Additionally, answer or respond the following questions:

·  Define addiction. (Write it out!) Explain – Do you think you are addicted to the activity you gave up for this project? Why or why not?

·  List and describe the 4 steps to recovery. Do you think that you went through any of these stages of recovery? If so, which steps? If NOT, why?

·  YAY!!!! - - If possible, do what you have given up right now! Yes! You have permission!

·  REFLECT: How did it feel to just do that? What did you learn through this project as it specifically relates to addiction? Was it hard? Was it easy? Does it change the way you look at the recovery process? Explain!
