Brief Bios of our Outstanding Faculty
Nancy Bewlay, Managing Director, Casualty Underwriting US and Canada. Swiss Re America, Nancy joined Swiss Re in 2013. She is Treaty Hub Head for US and Canada. Prior to that she worked at C V Starr & Company in the core functions of Underwriting, Finance and Accounting, Operations, Claims, Insurance Technology Systems Development, Reinsurance Treaty placement and Human Resources. She started in the insurance business with General Star in 1994 and worked with on excess liability coverage with Marsh and with Admiral Insurance Company,
Marshall Gilinsky, JD, is a shareholder in the Washington, D.C. office of Anderson Kill and practices in the Insurance Recovery, Captive Insurance and Commercial Litigation Departments. He is an experienced commercial litigator who applies his complex analysis skills with extensive experience in insurance coverage analysis and litigation and dispute resolution. Marshall’s insurance coverage practice is focused on property insurance, commercial general liability (CGL) insurance, errors and omissions (E&O) and directors' and officers' (D&O) insurance. Marshall also focuses extensively on assisting clients that own and manage captive insurance companies, especially with respect to resolving coverage disputes between the captive and its reinsurers or fronting insurance companies.
Carl Pernicone, JD, is co-chair of Wilson Elser’s Insurance-Reinsurance Coverage practice. Carl has extensive experience with matters involving toxic tort and environmental liability claims, including property insurance claims. He also applies the skill set he has developed in handling complicated environmental issues to assist insurers facing claims in emerging coverage areas such as climate change and clean energy technologies. For more than two decades, Carl has represented insurers and reinsurers across the country as counsel of record in complex, high-exposure insurance and reinsurance coverage disputes in state and federal courts. Currently, Carl is counseling insurers on the coverage implications of claims brought by plaintiffs residing in the vicinity of hydofracking operations.
Eric J. Sauter, JD, is a partner at Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker LLP. He has over 20 years of experience in insurance and reinsurance, co-chairs the firm’s Reinsurance network and chairs the Reinsurance Sub-Committee of the New York County Lawyers Association.Eric, who received his law degree from Emory University School of Law, has lectured at the Bermuda CPCU Society; the Brokers & Reinsurance Markets Association; “Bad Faith Liability” at the NY State Bar Association’s Law School for Insurance Professionals; the Risk Management and Finance Summit for Non-Profits; and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society’s International Conference. Eric also has written for numerous publications, including Alternative Dispute Resolution in Practice, the Insurance Institute of London and the New York State Bar Association. In addition, he is the co-editor of Wilson Elser’s Punitive Damages Review.
Markus Schmutz, Managing Director, joined Swiss Re Capital Markets in 1999 and for the past twelve years has managed the non-life insurance-linked securities (ILS) structuring and origination group. He has been a key driver of the company's growth as one of the leading broker-dealers in the ILS markets. Prior to joining the capital markets unit, Markus was based at Swiss Re’s headquarters in Zurich where his main responsibilities included risk modeling and pricing complex transactions. Markus holds a master's degree in mathematics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH).
Costantino P. Suriano, JD, a partner with Mound Cotton Wollan & Greengrass in New York City has more than thirty-two years of experience in domestic and international insurance coverage and litigation representing leading U.S. London, and Bermuda Market insurers. He has litigated cases in almost half the states from Maine to California. Cos has authored articles and lectured on multi-layer approaches to weather related catastrophes, ensuing loss, punitive damages, occurrence issues, letters of credit, and insurance trends.
He has represented European commercial entities in negotiating various business agreements and in the formation of branches and subsidiaries in the United States, and applying to U.K. courts for intervention staying U.S. lawsuits.
