1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times.

2. Do no touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials until you are told to do so.

3. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask for help before proceeding.

4. Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor. Never do anything in the lab that is not called for in the directions. Unauthorized experiments are prohibited.

5. Never play around in the lab area. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are prohibited.

6. Stay at your assigned lab station and focus on the assigned task. Do not distract others or communicate with other teams unless asked to do so.

7. Bring only the needed materials to your lab station. Everything else (books, backpacks, etc.) should be left at your desk. Keep your work area clean at all times.

8. Clean up your lab area and return all materials as directed when you are done.

9. Never put anything in the sink or down the drain unless you are directed to do so. Dispose of wastes in the proper container. Your teacher will tell you what the proper container is.

10. Exercise special care when handling glassware, chemicals, heat lamps, microscopes and sharp instruments.

11. Students will wear goggles any time chemicals, heat, or glassware are used. Latex gloves will be available when potentially caustic chemicals are being used.

12. Work carefully to avoid accidents. If lab supplies get spilled, broken, etc., notify the teacher immediately. You will be directed how to clean up the area and where to get replacement materials, if needed.

13. (Exception to #12) If you spill a chemical on yourself, rinse it off first, and then tell the teacher.

14. Never taste anything being used for a lab activity unless you are told to do so. Use the correct method to smell substances if directed to do so. Never bring food or drinks into the lab area.

15. Never remove lab supplies from the lab stations or classroom.

16. Students are never allowed in the science storeroom unless given specific permission.

17. Report damaged equipment or materials to the teacher. Notify the teacher of any unsafe conditions that you observe.

To sum it all up…focus on your assigned task, work safely,
be alert, and ask for help if you need it.

Failure to follow the safety guidelines will result in disciplinary action which may include removal from the activity or classroom, a failing grade on the assignment, parent and/or administration contact, and other measures, as needed.

I have read the Lab Expectations and understand the rules that are in place for my safety. I agree to carefully follow these guidelines and all other written and verbal instructions during activities in science.
